Camel Flies!

The Sopwith Camel built by Northern Aeroplane Workshops for the Shuttleworth Collection has made it's first flights at Old Warden. The first flight was made in the hands of Chief Pilot 'Dodge' Bailey on Thursday 18th May and is seen by courtesy of Darren Harbar's photograph above. Further flights have been made since then and the Camel is well on course for appearing at air shows later in the season.

Hurricane Flight at Shuttleworth

A third early Hawker Hurricane has arrived at Old Warden. Very soon three Hurricanes will be able to be seen over the Bleriot again, a sight not seen since before WW2!

Hurricane P3717 is privately owned and has been placed with the collection to serve as a living reminder of the sacrifice and valour of the young men who flew the type during the Second World War. P3717 joins fellow Battle of Britain veteran R4118 and the Collection's Hawker Sea Hurricane Z7015 and will be seen flying at the upcoming Collection air shows this season.

Don't forget to buy your tickets now for the season ahead. Some displays (particularly Navy Day and the Edwardian Pageant) are already selling well so we advise members who are planning to attend to purchase their tickets in advance as we are unable to guarantee that tickets will be available at the gate on the day.

Please note that all ticket sales are subject to availability and that SVAS members have no preferential treatment.

Please also remember to bring your SVAS membership card with you on the day as you will need to present it at the point of admission as proof of entitlement to the SVAS admission rate. If you do not bring your 2017 membership card with you, you will be charged full price on the gate!

SVAS AGM

The 2017 SVAS AGM was held on Sunday 21st May. Turnout was slightly down on previous years, but a few members enjoyed a trip on the 1913 Leyland ST purchased for the Collection by the SVAS and a tour of the interior of the new White Rose omnibus. A presentation on the new educational activities being championed by the SVAS was well received with several interested members offering additional help. Jim Box had decided to retire from the executive committee and was thanked for his many years of service. John Edser and Bill Grigg were re-elected to the committee and Rosie Hall and Matthew Studdert-Kennedy were also elected.

Collection Photography Day

Thursday 20th July 2017

Why not take part in a Collection Photo Workshop run by aviation photographer Darren Harbar?

You will learn the basic camera skills required to photograph aircraft. The day will incorporate plenty of practical skills training, combined with a small amount of classroom tuition. The day is aimed at beginner photographers who wish to learn the basic controls of their camera, and is is ideal for photographers who have a DSLR and are looking to get more creative and understand the use of shutter speeds and apertures. We do not discourage more competent enthusiasts from attending this course, but it will cover some basic elements of camera settings.

SVAS members receive a discount on the full price of the day, so ensure that you have your membership number to hand when you book online.

Shuttleworth World Record Holders for Most People Constructing Aircraft Models

Record Breakers!

It's official, the Shuttleworth Collection and IMPS Brampton are record breakers. Last November an attempt was made on the record for t he most people constructing aircraft models at the same time. The previous record stood at 250 models made and was held by the RAF Museum.

After extensive verification from the Guinness Book of World Record they have now confirmed that the record was not only beaten, but truly smashed at Shuttleworth!

The new record is 369 models!

Well done to everyone who took part!

Volunteer Opportunity

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with the educational offerings from the Shuttleworth Collection. This could be during the week when school visits arrive or it could be on event days in the new Discovery Zone marquee. If you think that you may be able to help, please contact the Collection (learning@shuttleworth.org) for more details.

Half Term Fun for Children!

Visit the Shuttleworth Collection over half term (from Saturday 27th May to Sunday 4th June) for the popular 'Build a 'Plane' Trail.

There are also 2 sessions of craft activities available on Thursday 1st June on a first come first served basis.

Your Chance To Take To The Skies

The de Havilland Moth Club Charity Flying Weekend will take place at Old Warden on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June.

You can purchase a flight in a vintage Moth for only £85 per person, all proceeds go to charity. There is no pre-booking, just turn up on the day on a first come first served basis. Gates will open from 9:30am, flying will start after 10am.
