WCSO Deputies Recognized for

Dedication to DUII Enforcement

Two WCSO deputies were recently recognized for their outstanding work in keeping our roads safe from alcohol and drug-impaired drivers during 2022

Deputy Trever Cooley was named the 2022 DUII Enforcement Officer-Of-The-Year, and Detective Jason McLaughlin received the Senior Trooper Maria Mignano Dedication To Duty Award for their dedication to DUII enforcement.

These awards are highly esteemed honors, and we are thankful to have Deputy Cooley and Detective McLaughlin as members of The Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Mental Health Awareness Month takes place every year throughout the month of May. During May, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office supports the movement to raise awareness about Mental Health.

Our Mental Health Response Team (MHRT) is a collaboration

that provides a rapid response from a skilled law enforcement officer and immediate intervention with an experienced Lifeworks NW clinician.

The partnership between deputies and clinicians allows for the

opportunity to balance and coordinate their communication efforts,

de-escalation abilities, and intervention tactics, all while providing a safety

component to those involved. In addition, MHRT connects those experiencing increased mental health symptoms or emotional distress to a safety net of services for ongoing help.

We are in the final countdown to the 2023 Washington County K9 Trials competition! Join us on Saturday, May 20, at the Hillsboro Stadium.

In partnership with the Sheriff's Office Foundation, this event provides an excellent opportunity for the public to connect with local public safety agencies and learn about the talented K9 units protecting our communities.

In addition to the competition, spectators will enjoy a safety and vendor fair, beginning at 10 a.m., and a meet-and-greet with the K9s after the awards.

Doors open at 10 am, competition begins at 11 am. We hope to see you there!

Last month, WCSO staff and deputies serving the City of Cornelius participated in Centro Cultural’s annual Día de los Niños (Children’s Day) celebration.

The sunshine brought many families to enjoy food, music, activities, and a chance to connect with their local law enforcement agency. Community events such as these provide an excellent opportunity for members of the public to interact with law enforcement in a positive and fun environment.

We want to thank Centro Cultural for inviting us to participate each year!

May is National Bike Month, highlighting the health and environmental benefits of bicycle riding and encouraging more people to get out and ride. As we head into spring and summer, many of us might dust off our bikes for commuting, exercise, or fun. However you ride, we want everyone always to practice safe bicycling habits.

Motorists can support bicycle safety by leaving space for bicyclists, only passing when safe, allowing at least three feet of clearance, and never on sharp corners or blind spots.

Roads are a shared responsibility; we can all work together to enjoy the outdoors safely.
