Sunrise Family Walk
Join Alex Wolfe for a refreshing walk at the first light of the day. Enjoy cooler temps and dimly lit skies before the sun makes its appearance over the mountains. Experience the morning chorus of native birds and possible wildlife sightings. This walk will be on smooth dirt or paved trails. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, water, and close-toed comfortable walking shoes. This program is appropriate for all ages. Paid adult must accompany children.

Birding El Rio Preserve
Join us at El Rio Preserve for some summer birding, which in the Sonoran Desert means searching for species like Black-chinned Hummingbird, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Bell’s Vireo, and Lucy’s Warbler, to name just a few. Remember to bring a water bottle and sunscreen, and to wear a hat and comfortable shoes. All ages welcome.

Join a Pima County naturalist for a peaceful morning stroll with time to stop and reflect along the low-key trails of Maeveen Behan Desert Sanctuary. This walk will include elements of guided mindfulness meditation and learning about the natural world around us.

Rise and Hike: Painted Hills
Beat the heat and join us for a moderate early-morning hike in Painted Hills Trail Park. We’ll travel roughly three miles and climb at least one small peak as we wind around the park, taking in the beauty and bustle of the Sonoran Desert in the spring. We’ll gain about 300 feet of elevation, and parts of the trail are rocky; Trekking poles are encouraged and sure-footedness is a must.

Family Outdoor Adventure Skills
Whether it’s hiking, camping, picnicking, or wildlife watching, spending time outdoors with the whole family is a fun way to get exercise and make memories together. In this interactive, family-friendly class, we’ll share ideas to help make outdoor family adventures fun, affordable, safe, and low-hassle. Through demonstrations and games, all ages will learn outdoor skills, tap into their inner naturalist, practice working together to complete camp duties (like pitching a tent or planning camp meals), and learn how to handle sticky situations that may arise. No experience or gear is needed. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park. All ages encouraged!

Although screen time and outdoor time may seem at odds with each other, there are a slew of apps that – when used thoughtfully – can help us connect with the natural world around us. This interactive, indoor-outdoor workshop will highlight a number of free apps designed to enrich outdoor experiences, from finding a new trail and mapping your adventure to identifying constellations in the night sky or birds by their songs. Bring your smartphone and try out some of these digital tools in Agua Caliente Park.

Beat the heat and join us for a moderate early-morning hike in Cienega Creek Natural Preserve. We’ll travel along the Arizona Trail and continue into the county preserve following the course of the creek, watching for wildlife, and listening to the hum of summer morning activity. Parts of the terrain are rocky and sandy, and depending on recent rainfall, we might make a few shallow-water crossings. Trekking poles are encouraged. Sure-footedness and sturdy shoes with good grip are musts.

Anza Tour at Historic Canoa Ranch
Learn about Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza and the group of Spanish colonial settlers who, in 1775, made their first stop at Canoa Ranch as they began an epic 1200-mile journey from Sonora, New Spain to colonize the port of what is now San Francisco. A 5-mile segment of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail extends through Historic Canoa Ranch. All ages welcome.

Fledgling Birders: Birding for all Ages and Abilities
Are you new to birding? Need help getting started? Birding is a great way to get outside to explore nature, learn more about wildlife and wildlife behavior, hone your observation skills, reduce stress, and connecting with others. Join naturalist Jeff Babson for a casual birding experience to familiarize yourself with birding basics. Loaner binoculars available.
All ages encouraged.

Dragons and Damsels Of Agua Caliente Park
Agua Caliente Park is an excellent habitat for dragonflies and damselflies. On this walk, we explore the ponds in search of damsels and dragons, learn how to identify them, and discover the secrets of their amazing lives. All ages welcome.

Twilight Mindful Nature Walk
Spending time in nature can have healing and restorative power, relaxing both the mind and body. Slowing down to consciously engage our senses while out walking not only calms and grounds us, but also deepens our connection to the natural world. Join a Pima County naturalist for a peaceful twilight stroll with time to stop and reflect along the gentle, mostly-paved trails of Desert Haven Park. This walk will include elements of guided mindfulness meditation and learning about the natural world.

Birding Cienega Creek
From ocotillo and creosote desert flats to willow-cottonwood riparian woodland, Cienega Creek offers a variety of habitats. We will be searching for migrant warblers, flycatchers, and other birds. Sections of the trail are steep and rocky. Please carry water and wear sturdy hiking shoes. All ages welcome.

Creatures of the Night
As the sun sets, many desert animals awaken and begin their daily activities. This program explores the nocturnal world of insects, spiders, birds, and bats. We will focus our attention around a blacklight sheet, set up to attract insects, while listening for nocturnal birds and bats, and anyone else who may make an appearance. Join us for a wonderful journey into nature at night.

Desert Night Shift
As most people retire indoors for the evening, our desert comes alive! Join Pima County naturalists on an easy hike to discover “who” is out and about in the desert at night. Learn why many animals, and even some plants, are nocturnal and how they manage life in the dark. Bring a headlamp or flashlight. All ages encouraged.
