What's New in Health Care

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Happy World Family Doctor Day!

Dear ACFP Members:

I hope everyone is enjoying Spring and the warmer weather it brings. At the ACFP, this season is a time to celebrate the incredible contributions of family doctors in the province. On behalf of the ACFP Board and staff team, I wish you, our members, and family physicians across Alberta a happy World Family Doctor Day (WFDD).

This Sunday, May 19th, is a day for all of us to reflect on the positive impact of family doctors in health care systems around the globe. For the ACFP, WFDD is also an opportune time for us to show gratitude and appreciation for your service to all Albertans. We know that in our province, 70 percent of health care is provided by family doctors. Thank you for being a constant in an ever-changing and overburdened system. You continue to mean so much to so many and it shows in the

more than 200 patient stories from the ACFP's decade-long “Family Docs Rock!” public awareness campaign. As such, the ACFP continues to align with the annual celebration, to amplify and underscore the value of family physicians.

We encourage you to join us for this celebration. Listen to our podcasts, read testimonials, and watch our videos...

FFYFP Blog - Guidebook in the Making

By Dr. Charissa Ho

Time sure flies. With this blog, I conclude my six years with the First Five Years in Family Practice (FFYFP) committee with the ACFP. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this amazing community and I will miss it as I take the next year or so to focus on other parts of life. Before I officially sign off, I am excited to share an exciting project that the FFYFP committee has been working on.

While we were at the 2023 Family Medicine Summit, we heard from a lot of our FFYFP members that there is no one place to get information about how to practise in...

Volunteer for Our Student Shadowing Program

The ACFP, together with the Alberta Medical Association’s Sections of Family Medicine and Rural Medicine, is looking for family physician volunteers to be part of the 2024 Student Shadowing Program. Whether you practise in rural or urban settings, share your enthusiasm and inspire students to make family medicine their specialty of choice. Placements will occur between June 8th to 28th and August 10th to 25th.

We currently have 20 medical student participants and counting! We need at least 12 more volunteer physicians in the Calgary and surrounding areas. To learn how you can volunteer for this year's program, visit our website.

Meet the Virtual Education Committee

First formed in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Virtual Education Committee (VEC) enabled the College to provide responsive and timely CPD/CME to its members through online learning opportunities. Today's VEC generously shares their insights and expertise in the development of continuing CPD/CME programs including the Thursday Evening Webinar Series. Learn more about the VEC members—Drs. Janet Craig, Andrei Aldea, Rukhsana Ameen, Tina Nicholson, and Mitra Rafati.

Take advantage of the ACFP’s Thursday Evening Webinar next week to learn more about the background of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Co-presented by the FFYFP Committee and VEC, the free session aims to help attendees identify potential applications of AI in a family medicine setting, discuss the barriers to its implementation in family medicine clinics, and the privacy concerns related to this technology.
