Trivia Night Raises Funds and Builds Community
From cultivars to farm tools, GardenShare’s first-ever virtual Trivia Night had participants
digging deep for answers! Sixty trivia enthusiasts participated on Zoom - using the Kahoot! app - for a rollicking and information-packed night of fun. With support from sponsors, participants, and a tireless planning committee, the virtual event went off without a hitch and raised over $3,000 for GardenShare programs and operations.
Thanks to our friends Joe Keniston and Victoria Lederer, whose masterful virtual trivia prowess made it all fun and easy, and to our
fearless trivia committee leaders Katie Dolan and Angela Villeneuve-Bronson. COVID continues to hurl us curveballs, and this team keeps hitting ’em out of the park!

Special thanks to our sponsors, whose financial support goes directly to GardenShare’s food security programming: Stauffer Farms, S&L Electric, Canton Apples, Hyde-Stone Mechanical Contractors, Mort Backus & Sons, and St. Lawrence Health Systems.

The night was made complete – and tasty – thanks to snack packs from Big Spoon Kitchen and The Blue House and beers from In-Law Brewing Company. It is wonderful to be supported by the local food community, which is central to GardenShare’s mission.

Though waterfalls put some over the edge and the music category hit a little too high for others, a wonderful time was had by all. Congratulations to our top teams and individuals: Birdhouse (Steve Bird, Mary Cabral, Dan Sullivan, and Heather Sullivan-Catlin), Lee Van de Water, and Nuala Woods! And thank you to our prize sponsors: Apothecary Chocolates, Big Spoon Kitchen, The Blue House, In-Law Brewing Company, Jake's on the Water, and St. Lawrence Nurseries.

Many thanks to all who made it a fun and successful evening!
Farmers Markets are Opening
The Canton farmers market is set to open on Tuesday, May 11, from 9-2 pm and the Potsdam farmers market will open on Saturday, May 15 from 9-2 pm.

All vendors and staff will continue to follow the precautions and guidelines laid out by the Farmers Market Federation of NY and Ag & Markets. We ask that shoppers continue to follow any and all rules set by the markets to ensure they stay open and safe.
Local Food Guides: Coming Soon

GardenShare produces an annual Local Food Guide highlighting local farmers, farmers markets, and restaurants and retail locations that feature local food. Also included is our Farmers Market Customer Guide, which details how to use SNAP and other budget-stretching programs at the markets!

Can't wait for the print version? We continually update the online version of the Food Guide, featuring beautiful farm and farmer photos from the CCE Farm-to-Table Initiative.

Special thank you to our previous intern, Hannah Lumbra, for designing the cover! Check out those Community Food Heroes!
Growing Our Minds
This month, we're recommending a bit of a different resource to expand your knowledge. With spring comes the promise of an abundance of fresh produce but we're still weeks away from the variety we're all looking forward to. In the meantime, get inspired and expand your kitchen repertoire with this cookbook full of springtime recipes.

"Northern Bounty: Spring and Summer Recipes from Adirondack Life is a collection of more than 100 recipes that have appeared in spring and summer issues of Adirondack Life magazine. In it, you'll find fresh dishes using local ingredients, both wild and cultivated-from maple syrup and trout to rhubarb and zucchini. It was compiled by cookbook author Annette Nielsen and includes gourmet camping fare, as well as recipes from top Adirondack chefs." - Cathy Carr, GardenShare Outreach & Education Committee Member.

Planning Your Garden? Master Gardeners Can Help
Whether you're brand new to gardening or an expert with a question, the Master Gardeners at Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) can help! Here's what GardenShare Treasurer and Master Gardener herself, Anneke Larrance, has to say about the program:

"Master Gardeners are local, trained volunteers who have earned their status by attending classes offered by St. Lawrence County Cooperative Extension. We study soil health, botany, trees and shrubs, diseases, insects, composting, fertilizers, perennials, veggie gardening, and more. Upon completion, Master Gardeners work in partnership with CCE to assist home gardeners. We make presentations, offer research-based horticulture answers, teach classes, judge 4-H horticulture entries at the fair, and write articles. Some recent articles by Master Gardeners offer advice on building raised
beds, planning your garden, and succession planting.

Soil samples from your garden can be brought to Cooperative Extension and a Master Gardener will help you interpret the results. As you’re planning your garden, diagnosing problems with fruit trees or brambles, assessing damage from critters, or redesigning your landscape, Master Gardeners who staff the Growline at St. Lawrence County Cooperative Extension can assist you. Send inquiries to slcgrowline@gmail.com or call 315-379-9192 Ex 239 and leave a message."

The Master Gardeners also maintain a section on the CCE website that contains many articles and web links of interest to local gardeners.
