Calls Mount for Gov. Ferguson to Veto
'Costly Bugs' in State Budget
| | |
Courtesy of the Association of Washington Business
Budget review: Editorials in The Seattle Times are calling on Gov. Bob Ferguson to use his veto pen to remove some of the taxing and spending decisions in the newly enacted $78 billion state budget, which includes the largest tax increases in Washington state history.
“Gov. Ferguson, scrub the budget carefully,” the newspaper’s editorial board writes:
Ferguson’s review of the budget should consider the consequences of raising business taxes that will, among other things, raise Washingtonians’ grocery bills, the cost of child care and bring new charges to hospital systems already in the throes of funding cuts that will imperil affordable health care.
WA’s just-passed budget has some troubling, costly bugs, writes columnist Kate Riley:
As he pages through the budget, one new tax Ferguson really should scrub is an expansion of the state sales tax on certain kinds of services. It had a slapdash introduction just 10 days before it landed on his desk... It didn’t have to be. I’ve written previously about how Democratic leaders put themselves in this predicament by ignoring the revenue forecasts of their own economists and budgeting with fantasy over the years.
Pulling back from the edge: Gov. Ferguson has until May 20 to take action on the budgetary bills. AWB is preparing its own short list of particularly problematic bills that employers believe Gov. Ferguson should strongly consider for his veto pen. Among the worst bills for our state’s economy this year are laws that would:
- Increase the B&O tax and put a sales tax on services,
- Give unemployment benefits to workers when they go out on strike
- Putting up roadblocks for new housing supply by implementing rent control
- Expensive new recycling and waste management mandates
Learn more: AWB’s Government Affairs team followed up the close of session with a webinar for AWB members on the biggest bills of the session. You can watch the 2025 Legislative Session Review webinar here.

Trade War Disruptions Impact
Seattle Ports and PNW Retail
| | |
Courtesy of the Washington Retail Association
The US-China trade war continues to disrupt maritime shipping and retail supply chains, with significant implications for the Seattle area and the Pacific Northwest. Recent reports show that up to 40% of container ships departing from China to the US are sailing nearly empty. This, combined with a surge in blank sailings, has impacted shipping volumes to Seattle and Tacoma, with container arrivals down 12% in April compared to 2024.
Retailers, particularly those in the Pacific Northwest, are already feeling the strain, with some businesses delaying or canceling orders due to concerns over high tariffs. This has resulted in fewer goods arriving at port and possible shortages in stores by late May. Exporters of key PNW products like apples, hay, and frozen French fries are also seeing a decline in demand due to China’s retaliatory tariffs.
Port officials warn that the effects of the trade war, coupled with rising tariffs, may lead to a further slowdown in cargo traffic. While forward buying temporarily masked some of the impact, the long-term outlook suggests even steeper declines in shipments, raising concerns for workers in logistics and retail sectors dependent on trade.

BCT Presents: Gutenberg! The Musical!
May 16 - 25, 2025
| | |
Gutenberg! The Musical by Anthony King and Scott Brown
In Gutenberg! The Musical!, aspiring playwrights Bud Davenport and Doug Simon present their hilariously misguided musical about the life of Johannes Gutenberg to potential Broadway producers. With boundless enthusiasm and a collection of hats to represent different characters, they perform all the roles themselves, from Gutenberg’s dim but devoted assistant Helvetica to the villainous Monk who worships Satan. Their historical inaccuracies and over-the-top performances turn the backers’ audition into a riotous spectacle, filled with catchy tunes and laugh-out-loud moments. This meta-musical is a delightful satire on the world of theatre and the creative process, showcasing the duo’s unrelenting optimism and sheer love for the stage.
Content Advisory: Features humorous and sometimes suggestive dialogue, but little strong or offensive language with the exception of one brief outburst (which is promptly admonished); some mature themes related to ambition and deception, but they are handled with a light-hearted and comedic touch; some comedic accidents and physical humor; some suggestive situations and innuendos—nothing explicit. Suitable for teens and adults, with its blend of satire and comedy making it an enjoyable experience for a wide audience.
