 Art Lecture June 23rd
The Extraordinary Life of Sofonisba Anguissola, 16th Century Catalyst for Women Artists

Irene Matson will be presenting this lecture on another fascinating woman of the Renaissance.  "The acceptance of female artists in the mid 18th century begins with one woman's accomplishments. Sofonisba Anguissola unexpectedly broke through the male-dominated field of art to paint in the court of King Philip II of Spain, which unfurled a pathway to success for female artists. How did she do it?  Using messages from her own paintings as well as historical documentation we will discuss the difficult choices that led to her great achievements," says Matson.
