Meet the community leader who is checking the mental health of community leaders and

Kimberly Dilosa - 2025

NEW ORLEANS, LA – May is Mental Health Awareness Month. “The Insanity of Giving Back” is a community initiative created by 28-year community leadership veteran Kimberly “@gawdmotherofnola” Dilosa to intentionally gauge the mental health of public figures serving Greater Orleans. “The Insanity of Giving Back” is based on Dilosa’s mental health journey as a community leader. She says, “Our community is only as strong as its strongest leaders. I was a leader in hidden, horrific mental distress. As a chronic helper, I was embarrassed to publicly admit my need for mental health help. It almost cost me my life. I know I have community comrades who are suffering in silence.  I had to create an outlet to help.” “The Insanity of Giving Back” raises awareness about the mental health disparities that exist among community leaders and culture bearers who carry the weight of serving community while connecting the leaders to mental health resources. The community engagement initiative was developed during Dilosa’s W.K. Kellogg Foundation community leaders fellowship. Implementation began in May 2023 with a pilot town hall meeting of community leaders candidly discussing the mental weight of community leadership. (Town Hall short video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2f6a24fwDY)

The Insanity of Giving Back: Community Caretakers of the 504

The next pilot town hall meeting was held with legendary comedians (Comedians Town Hall video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiGqihHvRtY) to measure the mental impacts of publicly performing to make others happy while suffering mentally.

“The Insanity of Giving Back” has evolved into a multi-faceted community awareness campaign that includes: “The DJPOLO504 New Orleans DJ Hall of Fame” in partnership with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, honoring legendary

disc jockeys while inspiring mental health wellness among our culture bearers. The DJPOLO504 New Orleans DJ Hall of Fame is now in Phase 2 of development to create a mental health photo exhibit based on each DJ’s mental health tip to culture bearers; The

#CareForTheCaretakersTOUR event series, which features “Mental Health Break Nights,” (Mental Health Break Night video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WAvNiOB2ec) gathers the community to honor the most impactful individuals and organizations publicly to increase mental positivity at the leadership level.

These FREE “parties for a purpose” feature the DJPOLO504 Hall of Fame DJs and allows the community to collectively celebrate leaders in an uplifting social environment. Honorees include: Larry Irvin (CEO, Brothers Empowered to Teach), Krewe of Nandi, Capt. Henry Smith and the Mystic Krewe of Music, DJ Jubilee, Capt., Zenia Smith and

the Krewe of Nefertiti, Line dance legends of New Orleans, Krewe of Athena Carnival Club, 41 impactful mental health professionals; The “MISSION 2026: Mental Health for Leaders 365” advertising campaign created to advertise the missions of local businesses,

churches, community organizations, etc. while honoring the leaders of these entities with custom ads featuring mental health tips from the leaders that will run for 365 days starting Jan. 1, 2026. Via “The Insanity of Giving Back,” Dilosa is committed to proving “Intentional

appreciation for leaders improves the leader’s mental health by reducing stress with increased positive feelings.”
