May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Coaching Supports Holistic Health

May in the northern hemisphere, with its warming days and blooming flowers, may seem an unlikely candidate for reminding us about the importance of mental health and the toll that mental illness takes. However, mental health challenges know no season, and many students experience a spike in anxiety or depression at this time of year, perhaps coinciding with the stress of exams, or accompanying the anxiety of graduating and moving from a known community to an uncertain future.

Academic coaching involves a holistic approach to supporting students. Coaches understand that mental health status is highly likely to affect learning and performance, and although they must maintain boundaries that separate their work from that of a counselor or therapist, they will often ask questions to help students strategize around how to adapt to their mental health challenges in order to learn.

When faculty and staff have a common language around mental health support, it can provide a more comprehensive web of support for students. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing offers targeted information about college students and mental health and offers Mental Health First Aid training that can help guide academic professionals.

This summer, consider a LifeBound training to build a common language of coaching that will take the effectiveness of your coaching staff to new levels.

As more students grapple with stress, burnout, and uncertainty, coaching gives educators a way to respond—not as mental health professionals, but as skillful guides. With the right tools, staff and faculty can help students reframe challenges, stay engaged, and build the resilience they’ll need far beyond graduation.

LifeBound’s training programs equip educators with the coaching strategies to do just that—building confident, future-ready students through meaningful, skill-based conversations.

Higher education is grappling with unprecedented challenges—rising mental health crises, the need for greater career readiness, and the unfortunate reality that many students struggle to secure meaningful employment or are let go shortly after starting. These issues affect not only individual students but also university outcomes like enrollment, retention, and long-term institutional success.

By equipping your staff with coaching training, you can help students build resilience, achieve meaningful employment, and address many challenges that universities face today.  Allocate your budget toward LifeBound’s training options this year and plan ahead to ensure your institution is prepared to address these critical needs effectively.  Let’s create a campus-wide culture of coaching and make an impact in 2025!
