May is Women’s Health Awareness Month! There is a positive connection between art and mental health—artistic activities such as sculpting, painting, or drawing are known to lower stress levels and promote mental calmness. Our residents at Hunters Woods Fellowship House channeled their inner artist to create tile decorations and enjoyed a fun afternoon.

Dr. Clishia Taylor, RN, President and CEO for American Health Care Professionals has long supported health care initiatives at Fellowship Square. Dr. Taylor is also co-founder and CEO of Bless My People Foundation, a nonprofit organization which provides multiple services and consultation for the underserved communities both in the US and the global communities.
Throughout the pandemic and during social distancing, Dr. Taylor offered monthly health information seminars over Zoom for Fellowship House residents. In 2022, Dr. Taylor and her team have been able to offer in-person wellness resources and screening services for Lake Anne and Hunters Woods Fellowship House residents. Thank you, Dr. Taylor, for helping to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents!

Resident Volunteers Serve Their Communities and Neighbors |
|
Resident volunteers are a vital component of the Fellowship Square volunteer team and make up nearly a third of our active volunteer pool. Fellowship House residents serve their communities and neighbors in a variety of ways: delivering food door-to-door, translating and transcribing information, leading programs, organizing events, and much more. We are grateful for our residents sharing their talents and helping improve our communities. |

The number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million by 2060, and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population will rise from 16 percent to 23 percent.

Our Solution to the Problem |
|
We’re in the business of helping lower income older adults. We have a long history of providing quality, affordable housing and supportive services that make a difference every day in the lives of more than 850 seniors that call Fellowship House home.
Along the way, we have improved and changed plans and protocols based on the needs of the residents and best practices in the affordable housing world.
The Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement report examines the changing definition of retirement and how future generations of retirees are different than those living in our apartments today. Not surprising, the survey revealed that Americans want to live longer, but only if they’re living well.
At Fellowship Square, we fundamentally believe that supporting and empowering older adults is a critical factor in the aging process. No person wants to be treated as if they don’t have a voice in how they age; no adult wants to be treated like a child, as if they cannot do for themselves. Older adults – regardless of their abilities – deserve respect and support, not pity and not relinquishing their decision-making authority to others.
We stand alongside our residents, not ahead or behind, knowing that they and their families can decide what’s best for them. We pride ourselves on creating communities where residents feel empowered, appreciated, valued and engaged.

Real Estate Intern
As a rising senior at Washington College, majoring in political science and minoring in business, I am so excited to spend my summer at Fellowship Square working as a real estate development intern. This is an amazing opportunity that I look forward to experiencing.
Growing up in Montgomery County Maryland, I have seen how expensive housing can be and have had my own personal experience with HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) as a child, living in affordable housing through HUD. With that being said, I know how crucial it is that people have access to affordable housing, which is why I take my position very seriously and hold it near to my heart.
I believe it’s important to do my part in making a difference in people's lives through Fellowship Square, therefore I look forward to growing and learning so much from this internship. This internship will further my knowledge in real estate and administrative work to help me achieve my goal of becoming a lawyer, practicing in the corporate and real estate arenas.
This summer I also plan to further my education and personal interests by taking summer courses, studying for my LSAT, getting more into fitness, and trying to travel as much as possible as I love to visit new places.

Farewell, But Not Far Away |
|
All of us at Fellowship Square bid a fond farewell to Curtis Whitlow, Service Coordinator for our Lake Anne Fellowship House. Curtis has been working as a Fellowship Square staff member and serving the residents at Lake Anne Fellowship House since September 2019 and will end his time with us as of May 31, 2022.
Once the residents move into their new building, Curtis will continue his service to them, but under the new management of Enterprise Community Development who is taking the lead on managing the staff and operations of the building.
Although we will miss Curtis as a Fellowship Square staffer – we will continue our relationship with him and the rest of the management team to carry on our work. Thank you, Curtis – we are glad you won’t be far away!

Broadband Community Summit |

Fellowship Square’s CEO, Christy Zeitz, participated as a panelist at the Broadband Communities Summit to emphasize the need for connected solutions in affordable housing so that families and seniors have access to the internet and wifi services for learning, education and day-to-day activities like ordering food and groceries online.
