Hello Neighbors,

May is a month of memories, moms, and – at City Hall – money. Here’s what we have in store for District 6 and across San Diego, including an important milestone a half-century in the making:

First, please join me this month in honoring the service members who gave their lives for our country on Memorial Day. From our veteran community to our active duty service members at MCAS Miramar, I’m so proud of our district’s historic and ongoing contributions to our armed forces. Please see below for opportunities to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We are also celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. This year’s national theme, “A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience,” honors the generations of AANHPI leaders whose strength and service paved the way for future progress.

As a first-generation Asian American, I’m fortunate to have been able to dedicate my life’s work to serving the community and uplifting voices that often go unheard. This month, we celebrate the leaders who came before us and continue building on their legacy.

Join us in celebrating all month long through local events and by supporting AANHPI-owned businesses. We’ll be spotlighting some below and on our social media throughout the month.

We also just marked 50 years since the fall of Saigon — a deeply personal milestone for many in District 6, home to San Diego’s largest Vietnamese community. I joined several members of my staff (Dustin Nguyễn, Tracy Nguyễn, and Kimberly Hang) to share our families’ stories and reflections in this op-ed (click here to read), honoring their resilience and the legacy we carry forward in public service.

Finally, in case you missed it, Mayor Gloria has released his Draft Fiscal Year 2026 Budget. Due to the City’s ongoing fiscal challenges, as well as tremendous national and global economic uncertainty, his proposal includes significant reductions across departments and programs, including library and recreation center hours, public safety, and homelessness services, in order to balance the budget.

There will be tough choices ahead, and I want you to be a part of this process. On May 5, the City Council will begin the Budget Review Committee hearings. Having served as the Budget Chair, I take seriously the responsibility to thoroughly review the proposal and will focus especially on how these reductions impact District 6. I encourage you to join us at City Hall to share your feedback or attend one of our upcoming town halls (details below). I hope to see you there.

Warm Regards,

Council President Pro Tem Kent Lee

P.S. How are you celebrating Mother’s Day? If you’re doing something in District 6, tag us on social media (@cmkentlee)! We may share some on our social channels.

Once the water line relocation is complete, installation of new storm drains will take place along Gold Coast Drive from Lipscomb Drive and Westonhill Drive and along Westonhill Drive between Pagoda Way and Gold Coast Drive.
