Stroke is preventable and treatable.

Here's what to know.

"Nearly all of us know someone affected by stroke," says Elaine Skalabrin, MD, the medical director of PeaceHealth's stroke center in Eugene, Oregon.

With close to 800,000 strokes in the U.S. every year, it's common.

Knowing the signs of stroke is vital because family, friends and bystanders are the ones who need to call 911.

Would you recognize a stroke if you felt or saw one? Learn how to respond using this simple acronym: BE FAST. The more people who know it, the more lives that can be saved.
