Take a trip inside the novel coronavirus, cause of COVID-19
|
|
In this animation, learn about the key proteins that make up the novel coronavirus. To help uncover treatments for COVID-19, Salk scientists are aiming to uncover insights into the mechanisms of this virus, as well as around the immune system.

Location, location, location: the cell membrane facilitates RAS protein interactions
|
|
Many cancer medications fail to effectively target the most commonly mutated cancer genes in humans, called RAS. Salk Professor
Geoffrey Wahl
and a team of scientists have uncovered details of how normal RAS interacts with mutated RAS and other proteins in living cells for the first time. The findings, published in
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,
could aid in the development of better RAS-targeted cancer therapeutics.

Experimental drug boosts levels of “good” fats
|
|
The lab of Professor
Alan Saghatelian
and a collaborative team of scientists have identified two genes that can regulate levels of healthy fats, called FAHFAs, in mice. Because FAHFAs decrease inflammation and increase insulin sensitivity, a better understanding of their regulatory genes may eventually lead to therapies for people with diabetes and inflammation. The findings were published in the
Journal of Biological Chemistry
.

Thank you for supporting Symphony at Salk
|
|
While Symphony at Salk will not take place in August, this singular event will return to the Institute’s iconic courtyard
on
August 21, 2021
. It is guaranteed to be a celebration of the power of Salk science with our many valued supporters.
In the meantime, the Salk Institute extends its heartfelt appreciation to the 2020 Symphony at Salk donors who chose to maintain their donations despite this year’s cancellation. Thank you!
