Reflections from the Hill
Occasional Outreach from the Benedictine Sisters

Living Graciously for the Good of Others

"...we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

Acts of the Apostles 6:4

It’s the 24th Annual None’s Ball,
And here is the catch:

No outfits to buy,

No colors to match!

The ballroom is empty,
The music is still,
So stay in your pajamas and Relax at your will.

No parking to find,
No hair to comb,
Just a quiet evening,
Right there at home.

It’s sure to be grand,
As we’ve always planned—
The best party in town
That no one attends!

Fifth Sunday of Easter, Year A

Readings: Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7; First Letter of Saint Peter 2:4-9; Gospel According to Saint John 14:1-12

Reflection: We are drawing near to the Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension, forty days after Easter, less than two weeks from now. Where does the time go? Time tends to fly by quickly, even when we try to live it mindfully taking one day at a time.

We might ask ourselves if over these days and weeks since Easter Sunday 2026 we have...

Pictured above: Debi Johnson, Administrative Assistant to the Prioress at St. Scholastica Monastery.

April 22nd was Administrative Professionals Day. We had the opportunity to celebrate Debi and all of her hard work and dedication that she provides to the Monastery. Debi has been a co-minister for the last 4 years and we are so blessed to have her as part of the team.

Thank you, Debi!

We appreciate you.

Sr. Susan recently shared a beautiful piece of art that was made out of glass by a local mosaic artist, Brother Fred Halwe SM (Marianist). Pictured is Dorothy Day (1897-1980), a Benedictine Oblate and co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement. Dorothy was named a "Servant of God" in 2000 in the process toward sainthood.

Our Local Socially Responsible Investment Coalition's (SRIC) Annual Education Event was held this week. It was titled, "Seeking Immigration Justice, asked the important question: "Who pays the price and who profits?"

Pictured (L-R) Sr. Bernadine Reyes, OSB, Prioress with the three guest speakers; Yvonne Dilling - SRIC Member and retired Mission Education Animator, Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers; Sr. Susan, OSB - Secretary to SRIC and Director of the Benedictine Coalition for Responsible Investment (BCRI); and Brianna Dimas - Managing Director of Communications, Public Justice.

Sr. Bernadine and Sr. Susan attended this informative event in San Antonio. Sr. Bernadine shared part of the presentation that Yvonne made to the group.

Yvonne said that when she was young she used to go for drives with her father and on the highway in the construction zones there were signs that read, "Your tax dollars at work." Yvonne compared that to the awareness now that our tax dollars are at work building immigrant detention centers to house people, often in inhumane conditions. She also shared data about a warehouse in San Antonio that was purchased by our government (and our tax dollars) to be used to build an immigrant detention facility. The amount paid for that building was far above what the market value would have been if an ordinary business was to purchase the building. It's important for us all to educate ourselves on issues we care about and respond in the ways in which we feel called.

Oblate News

On Sunday, May 3 at 2 pm, we will have an Oblation ceremony for the Initial Formation candidates who have discerned that they would like to make a commitment to become a Benedictine Oblate of St. Scholastica Monastery. Existing Oblates will have the opportunity to renew their commitment that day, as well. As this Oblate year concludes, we feel especially blessed by the continued growth of our Oblate program and Oblate community.

If you would like to learn about our Benedictine Oblate program, please visit the Oblate page on our website by clicking here.

Our offices and Health & Wholeness Center

will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance for Memorial Day.

MISSION STATEMENT
