Alumni College Online: Japanese Artists in Paris and their Environs
Tuesday, May 16, noon-1:15 p.m.
Online

Explore the transformation of the arts community in Paris during and shortly after World War I with Professor Aida Yuen Wong. During this period, Montparnasse, with its many cafés and bohemian community on the Left Bank, began to replace the more touristic Montmartre as the central art district, and many international artists settled there. We will look at the lives of two sojourners, Foujita Tsuguharu and Saeki Yūzo. While Foujita gained fame as a member of L'École de Paris, Saeki died largely unknown in a mental hospital. Their different paths showed the diversity of experiences and what life was like for modern artists active in the French capital during the Roaring Twenties.

All alumni, parents, friends, Brandeis National Committee (BNC) and BOLLI members are invited to join sessions online. Sponsored by the Arts Alumni Network and the Brandeis Alumni Association.

ONGOING EXHIBITIONS
Alison Judd, 2023, Summer Reading (detail)
Alison Judd | be-tween
April 21-September 30
Wien Faculty Center

Alison Judd '04, PB'05, uses color, mark-making, and form to capture the gestures of everyday moments — tranquil, disruptive, intimate, or routine — with her family. The abstraction of objects and figurative elements represents the changeable and fragmentary aspects of memory, in which these moments inevitably become a blur.

This pre-launch exhibition of art by the Brandeis Alumni Art Gallery, to be launched in the fall of 2023, is made possible by support from the Brandeis Alumni Association, the Office of the President, and the Division of Creative Arts. "Alison Judd | be-tween" will be on view in the Wien Faculty Center from April 21-September 30, 2023. Gallery hours: Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
