Mayor Gloria’s State of the City Speech

Mayor Todd Gloria held his State of the City speech last week in Council Chambers. He recommitted to housing development and highlighted accomplishments including 101 Ash repositioning and community plan updates. Looking to 2026, his administration intends to open up more city land for housing development including the former skydiving facility that was operating as the homeless navigation center. Furthermore, he highlighted the forthcoming Neighborhood Homes policy that is expected to be formed and passed this year. While there was not much discussion around issues our members have raised, including timelines for processing and rising costs for development, the Mayor struck a clear pro-housing note.

Preservation & Progress Advances from Committee

On Wednesday last week, the City of San Diego’s Land Use & Housing Committee voted unanimously in favor of supporting the Preservation and Progress proposal. This proposal is the first of two regarding historic reform, and focuses on what is generally thought of as low-lying fruit. There are components for streamlining and governance, appointments for individuals to the board, and appeal authority. Importantly, an earlier component that allowed for non-property owners to appeal a non-designation was removed at our coalition’s urging. The BIA team was present in Chambers, and encouraged by the attendance of so many pro-housing individuals and organizations. While we prepare for this to head to full Council, we will continue to keep momentum for the second package on reform which is where more robust policies will be included.

BIA Op Ed in the Voice

Following a very productive housing workshop in November, CEO Aimee Faucett coauthored an opinion editorial with Dan Silver of the Endangered Habitats League. This unlikely pairing argues for creating housing in already planned village areas in unincorporated San Diego and highlights the dramatic need for housing production.
