Mayor's Message:
Dear Friends -
Harmful algal blooms have been detected in our local waterways. This algae can make people and pets sick, so please be aware when allowing pets into the Hudson River, Rondout Creek, and other affected water.
Kingston Point Beach has been closed, and signs have been posted at Rotary Park as well.
While drinking and interacting with the algae water in the creek or Hudson River can be harmful to humans and animals, the City of Kingston tap water is not affected and is quite safe to drink!
-Steve
| | Harmful Algal Blooms Alert | |
What to know:
- People, pets, and livestock should avoid contact with any floating mats, scums, or discolored water. Colors can include shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red.
- Never drink, prepare food, cook, or make ice with untreated surface water, whether or not algae blooms are present. In addition to toxins, untreated surface water may contain bacteria, parasites, or viruses that could cause illness if consumed.
- People not on public water supplies should not drink surface water during an algal bloom, even if it is treated, because in-home treatments such as boiling, disinfecting water with chlorine or ultraviolet (UV), and water filtration units do not protect people from HABs toxins.

| | Street Tree Planting Program | |
The City of Kingston offers a free street tree planting program for residents and business owners interested in having a street tree planted on their property and who are able to provide care and maintenance.
Species and final locations will be chosen by the Tree Commission with a focus on encouraging biodiversity, targeting neighborhoods with low canopy cover, and planting sites that are most suitable for tree growth.
Property owners approved for a free street tree will be provided a list of native tree species to choose from. Lists will reflect trees that grow to an appropriate size for the street and nearby utilities. Tree species options will vary depending on availability.
In 2025, with the street tree program, 18 street trees have been planted so far, with another 10-15 scheduled for this fall. The application can be found here.
