Roadwork Update for Week of September 12

Mayor's Message:

Dear Friends -

As ever, our Housing Department has been keeping busy with important housing initiatives. Next week, we will host a presentation of the second draft of the Kingston Forward rezoning plan. The meeting will be in person at City Hall and virtually via Zoom (register here). The presentation will provide an overview of all the changes from the first draft.

The following week, we will be hosting three informational events regarding the Emergency Tenant Protection Act, and how it will affect tenants. More than 1,200 rental units in Kingston will be eligible for protections. Read more here.

There will not be a 9/11 ceremony this year. The Kingston Fire Department will have a private memorial and going forward will be having larger public memorials every five years. On 9/11 - and always - we thank our firefighters and emergency responders for all they do.

City of Kingston Drought Update

Though we had some recent rainfall, we remain in a Drought Emergency and mandatory water usage restrictions remain in place.

Water usage has gone down approximatley 100-125k gallons/day, but we know residents and especially businesses can do more to conserve. 

Currently, we are getting about 150k gallons a day from the Town of Ulster, and we thank Supervisor Quigley for his generous assistance! 

The Kingston Water Department has also activated emergency reservoir #4 to further supplement the City’s water demand and decrease amount of water drawn from Cooper Lake.

With this activation, you may notice a change in taste and odor with the water. The water is safe and potable, it's just from a different source.

New Playground at Kingston Point Park

A brand new playground is now open at Kingston Point Beach. In addition to the climbing wall, slides and other features, the play space has a newly-installed safety surface, benches, and a fence. 

The old playground at Kingston Point Park was taken down to make room for the popular new youth soccer field. The new playground was made possible by funding from the City of Kingston's Recreation Fund. The Recreation Fund, which comes from housing developments with 4 or more units, can be used to for parks capital projects.

17th Annual Tour de Kingston

The Tour de Kingston is this Sunday, September 11! Participant registration will be open unitl noon tomorrow for a discount, and day-of for full price. You can sign up for the 9, 16, 25, 31 and 50-mile bike rides, which all include a BBQ lunch and raffle ticket.  

The Family Ride is free of charge, but registration is suggested. The Tour’s family ride is a flat, five-mile course that starts at 10am and travels through Uptown and Midtown Kingston with rest stops at the YMCA and the Volunteer Fireman’s Museum. Riders are escorted by volunteer Ride Marshals and the Kingston Police Department.

Event registration fees include pre-ride refreshments, Bike Brothers Burger BBQ, raffle ticket, route map, and rest stops with food and water. Riders with any mechanical problems can be picked up by a support vehicle. Proceeds from the Tour support community bike repair, safety education for youth and the Tour De Kingston Community Scholarships.

Roadwork Update for Week of September 12

Construction on the Wilbur Avenue Paving Project will begin between West O’Reilly Street and Greenkill Avenue on Monday, September 12, 2022. The road will remain open at all times.

Paving is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 13 on Van Buren, and is expected to be completed on Wednesday, September 14, weather depending. 

Central Hudson will be working on Clifton Ave to perform the final retirement of the gas line replacement on the street.

Franklin Street Complete Streets Project: Construction continues on the north side of Franklin Street from Wall Street to Prospect Street.
