Mayor's Message:

Dear Friends -

A reminder that if you haven't already done so, please vote! This is an important election for our area, and early voting is currently underway. Click here for all the early voting information you need.

This week, I signed the Council's resolution supporting the Clean Water, Clean Air, Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act of 2022, which is on the ballot this election. If passed, the act would help Kingston continue with vital infrastructure repairs to safeguard our clean water, reduce flooding, protect against other public health threats, and create jobs.

City Hall will be closed on Tuesday for Election Day. Trash and recycling will be picked up on a normal schedule on Tuesday. All City offices will be closed on Friday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

Broadway Streetscape Project Completion

The Broadway Streetscape Project is fully completed! After delays due to supply chain issues, synchronization equipment for the traffic lights was recently installed and activated. The tree beds were weeded and mulched this week, which completes the project.

The project runs from St James Place to Prince Street, and is capped by the I-587 Roundabout project on the north end and the Broadway/Grand Street Intersection Improvements project on the south end. The City of Kingston replaced the sewers underneath Broadway before construction began. These projects together total a $25 million investment in Midtown Kingston.

The Broadway Streetscape Project includes:

- new ADA accessible sidewalks

- paving

- new lane configuration that improves safety for all users

- synchronized traffic lights

- 49 bioswales

- 2 interpretive panels that explain the bioswales

- 22 benches

- 76 new street trees

- 235 deciduous shrubs, 1470 herbaceous plants

- 23 trash and 23 recycling cans

- 28 bike racks

- removal of parking meters and addition of free 2-hour parking

- integration with the Roundabout & B'way/Grand Street Intersection project

- connection on the Kingston Greenline and Empire State Trail

“There are so many people and organizations to thank with this project, which has been in the works for many years,” said Mayor Noble. “Ulster County started this project back in 2015 and I was proud to carry it forward as the incoming mayor. I would like to thank the City of Kingston Engineering department, and City Engineer John Schultheis who oversaw this project, the City’s Department of Public Works, New York State DOT for the beautiful roundabout project, and our Streetscape project contractors GPI, and Luizzi. The purpose of this project was to reinvigorate the Broadway corridor and Midtown business district, and we hope to see this area continue to flourish.”

Veterans Day on Friday, November 11

Due to the dedication of a refurbished cannon that will be placed on the American Legion lawn, this year’s Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Kingston’s American Legion Post 150 at 18 West O'Reilly Street.

The ceremony will be held on Friday, November 11, 2022, at 11:00am. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall.

Blood Drive at City Hall

City Hall will host a Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, November 15 from noon to 5:00pm in Council Chambers.

Harriet Tubman Month in the City of Kingston

This week, Harriet Tubman: Journey to Freedom, a 9-foot, 2,400-pound bronze sculpture created by artist Wesley Wofford, arrived in Kingston. The statue will be on display at the Ulster County office building through January 2, 2023.

A series of events celebrating Harriet Tubman will span two months and will reflect the themes of activism, role models, heroes, human rights reparations, freedom, resilience, determination, contributions of women, and equality.

Roadwork Update for Week of November 7

Paving: Wilbur Avenue from Greenkill Avenue to Abeel Street will be milled and paved starting on Monday, November 7 and will be completed by Friday, November 11.

Central Hudson will be working between Dunneman Ave and the town of Ulster Line for most of the week, and possibly near the Emerson St intersection.  

Franklin Street Complete Streets Project: paving, curbing, concrete sidewalks and utility work have been completed. Remaining work includes installing bluestone sidewalks and restoration with some utility work. The full project is expected to be completed by December.

Midtown Lots Parking Lots Improvements Project: construction continues on the Cornell Street parking lot. Paving on the Monkey Joe lot was completed today. The Sea Deli parking lot is awaiting striping. The full project is expected to be completed by December.

Wilbur Avenue Repaving Project: Paving is complete for this project area. The remainder of Wilbur will be paved next week. Guiderail is currently being removed and replaced.
