Mayor's Message:

Dear Friends -

NYSDOT's major Wurts Street Bridge renovation has won an award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. The $60 million rehabilitation was named a winner in the Quality of Life/Community Development category.

The Wurts Street Bridge is a much-beloved historic treasure for our area, and we are appreciative of the care and close attention that went into its recent restoration. Thanks to NYSDOT’s investment in its future, we know this iconic bridge will be around for generations to come.

-Steve

Movies Under the Stars on Saturday

Kingston Parks & Recreation is hosting Movies Under the Stars on Saturday, August 23 in Academy Green, showing the new West Side Story, the classic film reimagined. Showtime is 7:00pm!

Bring a chair, a picnic and your friends and join the fun.

Post Office Park Guided Tree Tour

Join the City of Kingston’s Urban Forester for a guided tour of the new tree plantings at Post Office Park on Saturday, September 9 at 10:00am!

With 50 trees on the site, learn information about species, tree history, and benefits to birds, pollinators, and our community. The tour will take 1.5 hours and conclude with an optional 30-minute weeding blitz to remove small weeds around the tree planting beds to help with their growing needs.

Please bring water, sun/rain protection, and questions about trees! Tree tour will continue in light rain. If there are heavy showers or thunderstorms the event will be postponed to a future date.

Weeding blitz will guided by the Urban Forester and involve removing small weeds by hand around the tree planting beds. Gardening gloves will be available for up to 20 people, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own gloves. More at https://livewellkingston.org.

RUPCO Plus One ADU Applications Open

RUPCO has launch round 3 of the Plus One Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Program, now open on a first-come, first-served basis to homeowners who earn up to 100% of area median income (AMI).

The program provides grants of up to $112,500 to construct or rehabilitate ADUs — whether attached units like basement apartments or detached units such as backyard cottages or garage conversions. In return, participants agree to rent the unit at an affordable rate for a minimum of 10 years and commit to not using the unit as a short-term rental.

Homeowners are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. While previous rounds were limited to select municipalities, Round 3 is open countywide. The program website includes an “Additional Resources” section with ADU requirements by municipality and a guidebook to help residents plan their projects.

For more information and to apply, visit the Plus One ADU Program page on RUPCO’s website: https://rupco.org/plusone.

eBike Safety Tips

With the use of e-bikes and e-scooters on the rise, we’re sharing safety information.

A Consumer Product Safety Commission study found that e-bikes crash more than traditional bikes, resulting in more severe injuries. In the study, e-scooters experienced a higher rate of head injury, because these riders wore helmets less frequently.

E-bike & e-scooter safety tips:

- Be aware of speed. E-bikes and e-scooters have electric motors that in combination with pedaling power make them potentially faster than traditional bicycles. A significant number of crashes happen on the first or second attempted ride. New riders also fall by themselves or run into obstacles more often than experienced riders.

- Be aware of the weight of the bike. E-bikes weigh substantially more than traditional bicycles and are generally not as responsive to evasively turn or brake quickly.

- Learn the controls. E-bikes can have varying types of controls for speed, gear selection, and front/rear brakes. Familiarize yourself with all the features before operating.

- Check battery capacity

- Position your seat and handlebars where they are most comfortable and efficient.

- Helmets are required for 16 &17-year-olds and are strongly recommended for all other users.

Practice before using e-bikes or e-scooters on streets. Be conservative in your first few rides in traffic. Start with low power and progress to higher assist power and speeds. More at https://nybc.net/safety/e-bike-safety
