Dear Friends -

This week, I was proud to appoint Tony Davis to the Kingston Police Commission. Not only is he a compassionate community member, he brings many years of knowledge working closely with members of the community and law enforcement. Tony will be an asset to the Police Commission.

We have had a lot of roadwork lately. As the Kingston Water Department wrapped up their water valve replacement work early this week, they then shifted to emergency repair work on E. Chester. We provide weekly Roadwork Updates here, on the City's website and Facebook, and we do try to update Facebook as other roadwork arises. I thank everyone for your patience as we update and improve our infrastructure!

Mayor Noble Appoints Tony Davis to Police Commission

Mayor Noble is pleased to announce the appointment of Tony Davis to the City of Kingston Police Commission. 

Tony Davis was a member of the Common Council from 2015 to 2023. During his tenure on the Council, he served as the Chair of the Public Safety and General Government Committee for 6 years. As Alderman, he also served as the liaison to Kingston Police Commission and was a member of the Re-Envision Public Safety Task Force, which was formed to address law enforcement-community relations, use-of-force policies, procedural justice, and systemic racial bias, among other issues. The task force took an in-depth look at police force policies, procedures, and practices, and developed a plan, with a focus on the needs of the community and fostering trust. Davis is an 8th grade Social Studies teacher in the Kingston City School District. He holds a BS in Business Management from Springfield College and a MS in Education from the University of New England.

Davis’s term will expire on May 31, 2027. The next Police Commission meeting will be held on September 27, 2023 at 4:00pm. More at https://kingston-ny.gov/policecommission. 

Hispanic Heritage Festival on Saturday

The 3rd annual Hispanic Heritage Festival on Saturday, September 23 from 11am - 3pm has moved indoors to the Andy Murphy Neighborhood Center, due to weather. The event honors and celebrates the history, heritage, food, and accomplishments of the Hispanic and Latino cultures.

Go All In for Mental Health Event on Saturday

The free Go All in For Mental Health event on Saturday, September 23 on Field Court, will feature live music, art and wellness workshops, trauma-informed yoga and meditation, pickleball, and more!

Mental health organizations will be on hand to provide resources and to raise awareness to the mental health issues. Workshops include zine-making, building community free little library, singer songwriter workshops, flash tattoo sale, flower arranging, DIY journal, collaging, art therapy, herbalism and more!

Bike for Cancer Care 5K Run/Walk on Sunday

The Benedictine Foundation's 20th annual Bike for Cancer Care event on Sunday, September 24 is a 5K Run/Walk event which will start at the old Freeman Building at 79 Hurley Avenue. For more information, please visit https://bikeforcancer.org.

St. James Church Celebrates 200 Years

Congratulations to the St. James Church for their 200th anniversary! The beautiful historic church will be hosting free events all weekend in celebration.

Roadwork Next Week

Paving was completed on Hooker Street from Lincoln Street to First Avenue; Moore Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue; and Szymanski Street from Third Avenue to the dead end.

Central Hudson: Gas main installation will continue next week on Staples Street, Levan Street, Brewster Street, and Delaware Avenue with road closures and detours. Service installations will continue on New Street, Montrepose St, and Delaware Ave.

Henry Street Safe Routes to School Project: next week, Henry from Clinton to Furnace will remain closed for underground work. Sidewalk installation continues.

Citywide ADA curb ramps: to date, 59 ramps have been installed. Restoration on East Union next week and construction to begin on Walnut St.

Wurts Street Bridge: No work this weekend. Next week, paint touch up and caulk, continue steel repairs. Form and pour parapet walls South end, electrical conduit installation to continue and electrical work in chambers. Work on the lower North tower, work on upper tower providing inspection access and work on stanchions. Noise will continue to be loud on occasion while performing steel repairs.
