Mayor's Message:

Dear Friends -

This week, we were excited to announce the return of the Burning of Kingston. This year’s event will feature reenactors as in years past, but also offers new programming that is more representative of all the experiences of the Revolutionary War. We are proud to continue the Burning of Kingston tradition and bring more voices to the festivities.

City offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day, and trash/recycling pick-up will be delayed one day next week.

Burning of Kingston to Return with New Programming

The City of Kingston has partnered with the Ulster County Clerk’s Office to host the return of the Burning of Kingston, which will take place October 13-15, 2023, and will include Revolutionary War reenactors, talks and panels, tours, concerts and more.

2023 Burning of Kingston will kick-off on Friday, October 13, with a film about Indigenous Loyalists during the Revolutionary War, Oneida Nation: American Revolutionary War, The People of the Standing Stone at Old Dutch Church.

On Saturday, October 14, events include colonial camp re-enactments, a talk about the Esopus Indian experience in the American Revolution by Justin Wexler; jazz vespers depicting the plight of slaves during the Burning of Kingston; cemetery tours by Theatre on the Road; and a Colonial Ball.

On Sunday, October 15, there will be a walking tour of Hurley’s historic Main Street; and the weekend will conclude with a Revolutionary War-period chamber music concert by the Bard Conservatory of Music Ensemble.

The 2023 Burning of Kingston partners include: Bard College, the City of Kingston’s Arts & Cultural Affairs Department, Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of the Senate House, Hurley Heritage Society, NYS Parks and Historic Preservation, Old Dutch Church, Radio Kingston, Raleigh Green, Theater on the Road, and the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce.

Hooley on the Hudson on Sunday

The 22nd Annual Hooley on the Hudson will take place on Sunday, September 3, 2023 in TR Gallo Park from 11:30am until 9:00pm. The event features live music, step dancing, and fun for all ages.

City of Kingston Offers Free Bike Rack & Installation

The City of Kingston is taking requests from businesses and organizations for the installation of a free bicycle rack.

The City of Kingston received a total of 38 bike racks, with 8 already installed at Kingston Point Beach, Rondout community garden, and the I-587 Roundabout. Of the remaining racks, 10 are reserved for additional municipal locations, and 20 are allocated for the community program. Non-profits and businesses with spaces that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines are encouraged to apply. Locations must be within the City of Kingston and able to accommodate a 24 in x 35 in x 6 in bicycle rack with plenty of sidewalk access. The minimum space for installation is 4 ft x 7 ft.

Parking Task Force Applications Still Open

The City of Kingston has formed a Parking Task Force, to gather community input regarding parking issues in Kingston including, but not limited to, the business districts and during Snow Emergencies.

As the City of Kingston has recently passed a new form-based zoning code which will increase local housing stock, the task force will evaluate how to utilize existing parking resources. The task force will work toward a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a comprehensive parking management study.

Membership will consist of nine community members who live and/or work in the City of Kingston, including representatives of groups or institutions. While the focus is on residents, applications from individuals with significant ties to Kingston who are committed to equitable and sustainable economic growth may also be considered. The Parking Task Force is expected to meet periodically over 12 months.

Roadwork Next Week & Upcoming Paving

The KWD valve replacement project includes installing new distribution system valves to replace inoperable valves, will allow the Water Department to better isolate the lines in critical areas in the event of issues or main breaks. The project includes replacement of critical transmission valves and improvements to our SCADA system as well. Next week work will take place on Wednesday and Thursday (Sept 6-7) on Clinton Ave and St. James.

The project will involve some lane/road closures and detours. There will also be water shutoffs for customers in the vicinity. KWD will be doing outreach to the residents in the affected areas, and will be putting door hangers on the homes/businesses that are anticipated to be without water. The Kingston Water Department Facebook page will be updated as work progresses.

Central Hudson main installation will continue next week on Staples Street, Levan Street, Brewster Street, and Delaware Avenue between Broadway and Hasbrouck Avenue with road closures and detours.

Henry Street Safe Routes to School Project: crews are currently replacing storm and sewer connections at Fair Street and Henry. Concrete sidewalks are being installed along the north and south side of Henry Street, with bluestone sidewalks being installed along the south side of Henry Street. Underground utilities are being repaired and/or replaced, and old lead lines are being removed and replaced with copper as they are discovered.

ADA Ramps Citywide: restoration of Clifton Avenue, Prince Street, Smith Street, Park Street, East Chester Street and Hasbrouck Place is complete. Crews will move to restoration along Gill Street. Construction of ramps will begin along East Union Street from Gill Street to Lindsley Avenue. Central Hudson has replaced a pole at the intersection of Gill Street and East Union Street, and will be relocating wires from old pole to new pole.
