A Message From Mayor Steve Noble:

This week, I wanted to let you know about several ways to get involved in the community, including a variety of job opportunities currently open across the City of Kingston. There's a Grants Manager position in the expanding Grants Management department here at City Hall, among other great job openings. I strongly encourage local residents to apply. There's also a volunteer opportunity for an engaged citizen with the Board of Assessment Review, which is looking for a new Board Member. 

Parks & Recreation is having a photo contest, and the winning photo will end up in their 2019 brochure. As a part of our overall wellness initiative, I've asked the City's Health & Wellness director, Emily Flynn, to give us some advice to help us stay healthy through the holidays. Her first tip is one we can all use. 

There will be some schedule changes for the Citibus over the holidays, details are below so you can plan accordingly. And don't forget to save the date for a New Year's Eve ball drop and fireworks display in Uptown Kingston at midnight on the 31st. I look forward to ringing in 2019 with all of you!

Current Job Openings for the City of Kingston

Engineering Aide (Part-time position) - deadline to apply is December 21 by 4:00 pm.

Housing Rehab Specialist I (Full-time) - deadline to apply is December 21 by 4:00 pm
Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (Full-time position) - deadline to apply is December 21 by 4:00pm
The Board of Assessment Review is Seeking Applications
 
The Board of Assessment Review (BAR) is a great opportunity to volunteer for the City of Kingston. The BAR serves to hear all taxpayer contests of their property assessment and make a ruling for each contest. Being a member of BAR requires that each member follow Real Property Tax Law (RPTL) to make their decisions.   The committee members are not advocates for the City of Kingston or the complainant, they are advocates for Real Property Tax Law, which has clearly defined guidelines.
 
Past experience in real estate or related fields in not required.   Being able to enforce the legal duties set forth in the BAR Manual ( link) is most critical, along with attending three annual meetings:   the 4th Tuesday of May, the 4th Tuesday in July and 4th Tuesday in November. The City of Kingston's Common Council appoints the new member, with the current opening to be filled in early 2019. The committee has five members total, each serving five year terms. Training by Ulster County Real Property is required upon appointment.

Health & Wellness Tip:
Eat What You Love, But Really Love It

This time of year, workplaces are filled with food baskets and homemade cookies and all sorts of treats. Parties can be a smorgasbord of temptation and holiday dinners make it easy to pile up your plate. Most of us find it nearly impossible to resist these goodies because they are simply everywhere. Emily Flynn, the Director of Health & Wellness, has a piece of advice. "Try to be picky about your holiday indulgences. Focus on eating what you absolutely love, and bypass the foods you are just "meh" about. It can be difficult, but don't eat something just because it's there. If eggnog isn't one of your favorite holiday delights, then skip it."

Citibus Holiday Schedule
The Citibus schedule for the upcoming holidays is as follows:

Monday, December 24:  Citibus will be running a Saturday Schedule ending at 4:00 pm. (9:30 am-3:30 pm)
Tuesday, December 25: No Citibus Service
Monday, December 31:  Regular Schedule
Tuesday, January 1: No Citibus Service

Celebrate New Year's Eve in Uptown Kingston

The City of Kingston, in partnership with the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center and the Kingston Uptown Business Association, will be hosting a New Year's Eve celebration in Uptown Kingston. At the corner of Wall and North Front Streets, attendees will count down the final moments of 2018, and as the clock strikes midnight, a decorative ball created by local business Possibility Studios will drop. As Kingston ushers in 2019, a brilliant fireworks display sponsored by Basch and Keegan will light up the sky.
 
I also want to thank the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825, for their generous contribution to the festivities. Stay tuned for more details.
