Hello Fellow Brocktonians,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. The past two months have been full of exciting moments here in Brockton. We proudly celebrated Women’s History Month by recognizing the incredible women—past and present—who have made a lasting impact on our City. We honored two young heroes from the Hancock School whose quick thinking helped ensure the recovery of an injured student. Eighteen brave Brocktonians who lost their lives in the Vietnam War were commemorated. We welcomed the South Coast Rail Line to Brockton, which connects our community with New Bedford and Fall River.

Looking ahead, the revival season of our beloved Brockton Rox is about to begin. The Brockton High School Drama Club is preparing to bring Bye Bye Birdie to the stage for their spring musical. And believe it or not, graduation season is just around the corner.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Mayor Sullivan's Champions Update. It is my honor and privilege to serve as your Mayor. If I can be of service, please call my office at 508-580-7123.

Very truly yours,

Robert Sullivan, Esq.

Mayor

Brockton Honors 18 Brocktonians Killed In Vietnam

On March 29th, in honor of Vietnam Veterans' Day, Mayor Robert Sullivan hosted a moving ceremony honoring the 18 Brocktonians killed in the Vietnam War. The event was held at the War Memorial Building, 156 West Elm Street.

Family members, area veterans, VFW post 1046 members, elected officials, and members of the community gathered to pay respects to the 18 Brocktonians who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War. Many of these young men graduated from Brockton High School. At least one graduated from Cardinal Spellman. All of them were members of our community for too short a period of time and we continue to grieve them along with their family members and friends.

Mayor Sullivan would like to extend his gratitude to all who participated in the planning and execution of this memorable event: Mr. Dennis Hursey, Brockton High School Class of 1965 who spearheaded this event in honor of several of his classmates who were killed; City Council President Jeff Thompson, City Councilor Moises Rodrigues, Police Chief Brenda Perez who read the names of the veterans; Chartwell’s Catering for their delicious breakfast pastries; the Brockton Veterans’ Services Department; the Building Department; the Mayor’s Office; the Brockton High School Junior ROTC; the Brockton Police Honor Guard; Firefighter Peter Reardon, bagpiper; Firefighters Charles Hayward and Johnathan Colon; VFW Post 1046; the Trustees of the War Memorial Building; and the City’s IT Department. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Marcia Walkama and her students at the Downey School for their beautiful and thoughtful display.

The ceremony was a beautiful way to honor these 18 young men who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy.

Hancock School Students Honored As Heroes

On March 20th, Mayor Robert Sullivan, Chief of Staff Sydné Marrow, Brockton Superintendent of Schools Dr. Priya Tahiliani, Fire Chief Brian Nardelli, and members of the Brockton Fire Department gathered at Hancock School with Principal Stephen Shaw-Lyon to officially commend two young heroes.

Students, Jayline Mendes and Ann-Loika Louis-Jeune, displayed exceptional bravery and quick thinking when they administered first aid to a second-grade student who had fallen and sustained an injury on the school bus. Their calm and swift actions prevented the situation from worsening, and the second grader fully recovered.

The City could not be more proud of these two young Champions and we thank them for their quick and effective actions.
