Mayor Woody Washam encourages Cornelius residents to take proactive steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19
CORNELIUS, NC On Tuesday, March 10, Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency in North Carolina in response to five new cases of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (aka COVID-19) in Wake County, bringing the statewide total to seven.

While the current immediate health risk to the general public in North Carolina is considered low at this time, all residents are encouraged to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving situation.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services ( NC DHHS) published the following recommendations statewide, targeted at protecting people at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
Statewide Preventative Recommendations
High-Risk Persons
High-risk is classified as adults over 65 years and those with underlying health conditions including heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes, or with weakened immune systems

NC DHHS recommends that people at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 avoid large groups of people as much as possible. This includes gatherings such as concert venues, conventions, church services, sporting events, and crowded social events. People at high risk should also avoid cruise travel and non-essential air travel.

Adult Congregate Living Facilities
NC DHHS recommends that all facilities that serve as residential establishments for high-risk persons described above should restrict visitors. These establishments include nursing homes, independent and assisted living facilities, correctional facilities, and facilities that care for medically vulnerable children.

Mass Gathering Events
NC DHHS recommends that event organizers:
  • Urge anyone who is sick to not attend.
  • Encourage those who are at high risk, described above, to not attend.
  • Adopt lenient refund policies for people who are high risk.
  • Find ways to give people more physical space to limit close contact as much as possible.
  • Encourage attendees to wash hands frequently.
  • Clean surfaces with standard cleaners.

All Travelers
NC DHHS recommends that all travelers returning from countries and US states impacted by COVID-19 follow NCDHHS guidance on self-monitoring.
Local Recommendations
Cornelius residents are encouraged to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving situation via reliable sources including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the NC DHHS and the Mecklenburg County Public Health Department (MCPH).

“Because COVID-19 spreads much like the common cold and flu, it is important that all citizens take proactive steps to help maintain the safety and wellbeing of our community,” said Mayor Woody Washam. “We encourage all to follow the recommendations of the CDC and NC DHHS to slow the spread of the virus. Stay home and focus on your health if you’re sick, cover your cough, and wash your hands often. These seemingly simple steps can help reduce the spread of disease.”

Town officials are monitoring the situation closely and are encouraging Town staff to take precautions in the office and at home. Visitors attending meetings and events at Town Hall will notice new “No Handshaking” signs and reminders throughout the buildings of proper respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene.

For more information on COVID-19, the public is encouraged to review a fact sheet provided by the NC DHHS.
