Hello Lydia,
I am often asked what a regular day in my job looks like. We are now three years into serving District 9 and answering that question has not become any simpler. Any single day rarely looks like the day before or the day after. Still, there are a couple of things that are constant.
There’s a lot of learning. Sometimes, I learn about a policy issue. Other times, I learn more about city operations. I also learn a lot about the unique lives and histories of District 9 residents. As a curious person, these learning opportunities are one of my favorite aspects of being a councilmember.

Another constant is how much I will depend on my District 9 team. On a daily basis, the team demonstrates their skill, ability, and commitment. I see it in the preparation from our our policy team. I see it in the way the community empowerment team keeps me updated on the daily goings on in each of our many communities. And I saw it on Monday as our reappointment as Council President is largely a result of the incredible work our team does.
This week’s email includes instances of items the District 9 team has put tremendous work into. Our contributions to the Housing Action Package required weeks and weeks of research by our policy team; facilitating the process for filling the Commission on Police Practices requires huge amounts of time and effort and the same is true for identifying candidates to the Commission. Even these emails require significant effort from our communications team in coordination with the rest of staff.
All of this is to say I am incredibly grateful to be surrounded by such a remarkable team. I hope you’ll send them some love during this holiday season for being the engine for all we do.
