MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

Did you see? Santa came to Ossining this past weekend – and our Recreation Staff (as always) worked tirelessly to make his visit memorable for all of you. But it's not just us, it's the whole community that makes these events special. Your participation and enthusiasm are what make these moments truly memorable.

We started with the annual tree lighting in Market Square on Friday, and then on Saturday, Santa had breakfast with our local families!

Good news – we are still collecting letters to Santa at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center, so please be sure to drop them off by December 18th so we can deliver them to the North Pole.

Each year in the United States, National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day honors those who lost their lives when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. More than 3,500 Americans lost their lives or were wounded on that solemn day. It marked a turn in the United States' position regarding involvement in World War II. As a result, the attack forced the U.S. into a war that had been raging for two years. On Saturday, our local Veterans gathered at 16 Croton Ave to continue the annual tradition of memorializing and paying tribute to those who lost their lives.

Last week, the Ossining Police proudly added to its ranks as Officer Nate Fischer and Officer Kira Villegas graduate the 158th session of the Westchester County Police Academy.

Of special note, Officer Villegas served as a squad leader for her class, and Officer Fischer won the academy’s Firearms and Tactical Award.

Well done, Officers! Welcome aboard!

I want to give a special shout-out to Kaeden Barnes, a very special seven-year-old in Ossining. After the daylight-saving time change, he noted that the clock at 200 Main Street was an hour ahead and brought it to our attention. Thank you for being so observant and ensuring the Village of Ossining runs on the right time!

On January 1, 2025, the Village of Ossining will host the 2025 Inauguration of Elected Officials.

By Village charter, elected officials begin their new term at noon on the first of the year. The ceremony will take place at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend.

Now Hiring! We are currently accepting applications for a full-time Laborer position. Click here to learn more: https://bit.ly/3tnbz9B

This week’s Work Session will be held at 16 Croton and begin at 7:30PM on Wednesday, December 11th.

The Work Session Agenda will be as follows:

  • We will begin with a status update from PRAC, led by PRAC Chair Rev. Mary Phifer.
  • Building Inspector Joe Agostinelli will join us to discuss a request for a License Agreement at 10 Marble Place—this came up when the applicant was before the Zoning Board of Appeals, and it was flagged they have a structure in their plans that was, at some point, constructed on the Village's right of way.
  • Village Treasurer Dale Brennan will join us to discuss the outstanding water, sewer, and landscaping charges that need to be levied on the Village's 2025 tax bills.
  • Westchester County notified all municipalities that they are, once again, spearheading the process for Hazard Mitigation Planning updates (only county agencies are eligible for the FEMA grants that fund the preparation work, so it makes sense to operate as a consortium). All that is needed at this time is to sign a Letter of Intent to participate—the process will not begin in earnest until sometime in 2025.
  • Finally, Assistant Village Manager Maddi Zachacz will go through the Town/ Village’s combined list of proposed actions to increase our resiliency, a required component of the Climate Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation (CVAA) plan.
