MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

Ok, Ossining—are you ready for the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th, 2024? First and foremost, it is not safe to look directly at the eclipse. Many County and State viewing locations will have special viewing glasses available during the eclipse.

This total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It will begin over the South Pacific Ocean and enter North America at around 11:07 AM PDT, exiting on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 PM NDT.

Eleventh and final of our series of volunteer committee spotlights: the Village of Ossining’s newest volunteer board – The Placemaking Committee:

You might not be familiar with the term placemaking. Put simply, it describes a people-centered approach to shaping public spaces. In other words, placemaking is a collaborative process where the community reimagines and reinvents various places that might be overlooked. For example, a large blank wall on the side of a building could be transformed by a colorful mural, a barren patch of land could become a pollinator garden, or a bus stop could become an engaging and comfortable place to sit. These are just a few ways the Ossining Placemaking Committee hopes to transform our Village--and bring people together. The Placemaking Committee includes artists, urban planners, horticulturalists, project managers, and other talented individuals.

Here are some of the goals of Ossining’s Placemaking Committee:

  • Spark public discourse about past and present public spaces
  • Create beauty and delight and encourage public use of outdoor spaces
  • Engender civic pride that highlights the cross-cultural strengths of the community
  • Support community health and safety in public outdoor spaces
  • Grow social justice by creating public spaces that support Ossining’s diverse community
  • Build or improve public spaces
  • Catalyze economic development that is integrated with the other placemaking goals
  • Promote environmental sustainability as a value in the prioritization of placemaking projects.
  • Nurture an authentic sense of place by integrating history into the Committee's placemaking projects.
