A Message from the Mayor

Dear Neighbor:

I know the sunny days of spring feel far away today, but they’ll be here before you know it -- and so will the state’s upcoming ban on single-use plastic and paper bags, which goes into effect on May 4. That’s why today we’re kicking off our Bag Up Cherry Hill campaign, an effort to educate residents and business owners about the new law and help make it a success.

Together, we can help make our community more sustainable, cleaner and better prepared for the future ahead. Keep an eye on the Township’s website and social media pages in the coming weeks for more information about the ban, and how you can pick up your own free Cherry Hill reusable bag!

To start, check out our Bag Up Cherry Hill website, where you can find many resources from NJ Clean Communities and the Department of Environmental Protection.

Sincerely,

Susan Shin Angulo

Mayor and Council President Join Dedication Ceremony

Over the weekend, Mayor Angulo and Council President David Fleisher were joined by Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, Camden County Historical Society Treasurer Bob Shinn and residents at the dedication ceremony of the Shaula C. Wright Little Free Library honoring the late Cherry Hill resident, Shaula Wright, a long time Cherry Hill resident, historian and lifelong reader.

The Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that promotes neighborhood book exchanges, usually in the form of a public bookcase. The Shaula C. Wright Little Free Library, at the home of Barclay resident Christine Kostyrka, honors the memory of Shaula. Many of the books in the library were donated by Shaula, and helped her build a friendship with Christine, who first installed the library in 2016.

Shaula often said "The most wonderful gift to yourself is to be able to read."

Thank you to Christine, Shaula's daughter Martha Wright, Bob Shinn, family and friends for creating a lasting legacy for Shaula, "a wonderful gift" that the entire neighborhood can enjoy.

Mayor Reads to 5th Grade Class at African American Read-in

This week, Mayor Angulo attended the annual African American Read-In at Horace Mann Elementary School. The African American Read-In (AARI) is a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering African American books and authors.

Mayor Angulo read "Sit In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down," by Andrea Davis Pinkney, with illustrations by Brian Pinkney, to a 5th grade class. The book recounts the momentous Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in, when four college students staged a peaceful protest that became a defining moment in the struggle for racial equality and the growing civil rights movement.

Thank you for the invitation Horace Mann Elementary!

Where and How to Dispose of Unused Medicines

Over-the-counter and prescription medications should not be disposed down the drain because wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove pharmaceutical compounds and they may end up in your local waterways, and may eventually be found in drinking water.

You can even bring your unwanted or expired household medications to the Cherry Hill Police Department and place them into the Project Medicine Drop box - anonymously and free of charge. The medication will then be safely and properly destroyed. *Remove medication from its original packaging and place it in a plastic sandwich bag. No liquids or syringes accepted.

Senior Living

Programs may help seniors stay at home as they age

It's wonderful to be able to stay in our homes as seniors and remain close to family, friends, neighbors, and religious organizations. As Cherry Hill residents, there are several programs available to keep senior homeowners safe and comfortable in their homes.

  • Be sure to sign up for Homestead Benefit Program and Senior Freeze Program (Property Tax Reimbursement). These state programs have application periods. The 2022 application period has not been announced. Check the website for application period and instructions. Income levels of $150,000 for homeowners over 65 and $75,000 for under 65 qualifies.
  • The Handy Helper program will help pay for small repairs for those that are income eligible. There is a program for large repairs like roof replacement, heater replacement, through the Camden County Home Improvement Program, the repairs are done and the cost of the replacement is a lien on the property with no interest and does not have to be paid back until the property is sold. Contact Cherry Hill Community Development for applications for these programs.
  • The Cherry Hill Fire Department is also continuing with its home inspection program for smoke detectors, just contact the CHFD at 856-795-9805 to make an appointment.

For any questions on this, or any Cherry Hill Senior Citizens issue, please contact Senior Services Program Coordinator Gaye Pino at gpino@chnj.gov or 856-671-4800. She'll be happy to talk with you!

AARP Senior Tax Help- By Appointment Only!

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide services will again be available to Cherry Hill area residents from February 1 through April 12 - with a different twist for 2021: There will be no on-site traditional tax preparation where the taxpayer sits with an AARP Tax-Aide during the tax preparation process.

Instead, taxpayers will have the choice of 2 service models:

Same Day Drop-Off: Taxpayers interact with an IRS-certified Tax-Aide in a 20-30 minute in-person and socially distanced meeting. During the appointment, the Tax-Aide will complete the intake process and write a receipt for all tax documents collected. These meetings, available by appointment only, will take place in the Municipal Building in Room 208 on Tuesdays and Fridays, 10am to 2pm.

Before the taxpayer leaves, they will make a follow-up appointment to return the same day to review the printed tax return, sign an authorization for AARP Foundation to file the return electronically, and acknowledge their receipt of the original tax documents.

Taxpayers can only make appointments by accessing the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Site Locator for Cherry Hill at: www.aarpfoundation.org/Tax-Aide after January 15th. Taxpayers will receive an automatic confirmation email. A follow-up email from aarp.cc.pt@gmail.com will include the links to documents to be printed, completed, and brought to the drop-off site. If you do not have a printer, packets containing all required documents will be available for pick-up at the Community Center and the Municipal building.

If there are no appointments available, taxpayers can add themselves to the appointment waitlist. An AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will contact waitlisted taxpayers by phone as appointments become available.

Self Preparation: Under this model, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides taxpayers with free access to software so they can prepare their own taxes. Taxpayers can also request help from an IRS-certified counselor to coach them through the process by phone or through computer screen-sharing. Participants can only request virtual tax prep assistance through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide's website www.aarpfoundation.org/Tax-Aide. Participants must provide a private email address to use this model.

Please do not contact this site about any of the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide service offerings. They are wonderful, supportive hosts, but they are not AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers.
