MAYOR'S UPDATE
From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin
So many of us remember exactly where we were 20 years ago on 9/11. I recall being downtown and walking to Grand Central filled with dust as so many of us walked up the avenues of Manhattan trying to find a way to get home. The weather was a perfect Northeast day, similar to this past Saturday. Then it turned into a horrific scene that many who were there consider life-changing. So it is with this in mind that this past Saturday morning, our community came together to remember that day, 20-years ago, and honor the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Together with our first responders, the Town of Ossining and the Village of Briarcliff, we paid tribute to the lives that were lost on 9/11 as well as those that passed due to devastating illnesses related to exposure. Ossining has always demonstrated resilience, and what we showed following 9/11 was no exception—it is our collective strength and shared hope for a better tomorrow that carried us through this tragedy and what will continue to light our way in an uncertain future. It is also significant to remember that many around the county suffered loss and long-term illness. On Saturday afternoon, County Executive Latimer and first responders, and elected officials unveiled a memorial to those who have suffered since that day.
On a lighter note, I had the pleasure of enjoying a beautiful Sunday on the waterfront at the Ossining Boat and Canoe Club’s annual clam bake. Fun was had by all. I also enjoyed a neighborly visit with the folks from ENU: a local grassroots community engagement and youth organization.
Please join me along with our fire department and its hundreds of dedicated volunteers for the Fireman's parade in the Village of Ossining. Saturday, September 18th at 3 pm.
The Village & Town of Ossining with Green Ossining invite you to participate in the 2021 International Car Free Day on September 22, 2021! In partnership with 511NYRideshare, we encourage Ossining residents and community members to reduce their single-occupancy driving and instead: telework, bike, walk, carpool, vanpool, drive an electric vehicle, or drive an electric vehicle ride a train, bus, or subway. I will be holding a “Conversation with the Mayor” at Market Square Saturday, 9/18, to discuss any issues you might have regarding the environment or any other issues 10 am- 11:30 am.
Business View Magazine interviewed me and other representatives of the Village of Ossining for the magazine’s focus on economic development in U.S. Communities. I am so pleased to share the final result. The article discusses how we pride ourselves on Ossining’s cultural diversity, as well as our abundance of recreational opportunities, a variety of housing options, and our exceptional local school system, which boasts award-winning STEM and music programs alongside dual-language classes. The Village of Ossining is an ideal place to live, work and play for people of all ages. Fingers crossed that the leadership team behind the 5th round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative will agree with us—later today, we will be submitting our application to compete for a $10 Million investment plan to transform Ossining’s downtown!
