"There is no savior coming for St. Louis," Amy Shaw told attendees at the release of the 11th annual "State of the St. Louis Workforce 2019" report (PDF available) Wednesday morning (August 7). "The savior is in this room." 
 
Shaw, interim CEO and president for the Nine Network of Public Media, was speaking to the choir. The audience at the Mildred Bastian Theater at St. Louis at St. Louis Community College (SLCC) included many familiar faces in the St. Louis workforce development space.
 

Landmarks to Honor Gene Mackey at 60th Birthday Celebration Nov. 1

As part of celebrating 60 years in the preservation game, the Landmarks Association of St. Louis will honor the legacy of noted local architect Gene Mackey III.  
 
The association has named Mackey, who died in 2016, as the winner of the H. Meade Summers Jr. Award.  Mackey will be honored Nov. 1 at a soiree at 40 Portland Place in the Central West End. 
 
Calling Mackey a "fearless advocate" for historic preservation," the association noted his 50-year career of working "with a heart directed toward civic design and a soul steeped in a preservation ethic."
 
7 Things to Know About St. Louis' Bid for an MLS Team
From St. Louis Magazine: The waiting game continues for St. Louis' Major League Soccer team bid. In April, we saw our first glimpse of the renderings for a proposed 22,5000-capacity soccer stadium near the forthcoming St. Louis Aquarium. Soon thereafter, the league decided to expand to 30 teams, with St. Louis and Sacramento appearing to lead the pack and a decision expected around the time of the MLS All-Star Game on July 31. Alas, that time has come and gone.
 
Young Seismic Retrofit Required Delicate Work, Pinpoint Scheduling
McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has completed an innovative seismic renovation of the Robert A. Young Federal Building-one of downtown St. Louis' largest office buildings-to improve the historic structure's seismic performance.  
 
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which owns and manages the 20-story, 1-million-sq.-ft. building, undertook the $75 million design-build project to provide additional shelter-in-place opportunities and safe exits for the building's 3,000 occupants in the event of an earthquake.
 
 
Howard Hayes Begins New Chapter as Executive Director of SLATE
This coming Monday Howard Hayes, longtime stalwart in the trenches of St. Louis diversity and inclusion efforts, returns to St. Louis City government. Mayor Lyda Krewson has appointed Hayes as executive director of the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE).
 
Attending the annual St. Louis Community College "State of the St. Louis Workforce"  program on Thursday (Aug. 7), Hayes told ConstructForSTL that he is looking forward to the challenges of his new position and plans to hit the ground running.
 
 
Everything Pointing Up for St. Louis Office Market
From REJournals: Here are the basics for the St. Louis office market: Its vacancy rate fell during the second quarter of the year. And while that was happening, net absorption, construction and rental rates were rising. 
 
So, yes, the St. Louis office market saw a strong second quarter.  Colliers International, in its second quarter St. Louis office report, said that the office vacancy rate in the St. Louis market fell to 13.27 percent in the second quarter. That's down from 13.54 percent one year earlier.
 
Historic Inns at St. Albans to Build New $3.6M Guest Lodge
The Inns at St. Albans is expanding with the construction of a new lodge offering 12 overnight rooms and 18 total beds for guests at weddings, corporate retreats and weekend cooking school events at the historic hospitality venue at the western edge of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The $3.6 million, 11,000 square foot lodge will double the existing 14 rooms of overnight accommodations currently available for events at the Inns at St. Albans while also adding a meeting space for up to 25 participants.
 
Changing of the Guard at McCarthy: Raymond Sedey Selected as Next CEO
McCarthy Holdings, Inc. announced Thursday (August 8) the selection of Raymond J. Sedey, 42, as the firm's next chief executive officer. On Jan. 1, 2020, Sedey will assume the position - currently held by Michael D. Bolen - who will continue in the role as chairman of the McCarthy board of directors.
 
Founded as a family-owned business in 1864, McCarthy transitioned to 100 percent employee ownership in 2002, becoming one of the nation's largest Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) companies.

From St. Louis Post-Dispatch: On the site of a QuikTrip that burned in August 2014, politicians and business leaders squeezed into a conference room of a community center, opened two years ago to help heal one of the scars left by the unrest. 
 
With the fifth anniversary of the death of Michael Brown days away, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis on Wednesday touted rebuilding on West Florissant Avenue, the epicenter of protests and riots sparked by the shooting of the black teen by a white police officer.

Chroma 2 Office Unveiled
From CityScene STL: The final phase of the massive block sized development in the Grove, Chroma, now has a rendering for the 2-story office building to be built between the planned Chroma 2 Apartments and the driveway into the existing parking garage.
 
The desire to build an office building at Chroma has been around for some time and as Green Street and Koman ramp up their investments in the area, Chroma Phase 2 will join in to the mix.
 
Enterprise Opens Financial Services Support Center at Mission: St. Louis
From KMOV4: Enterprise Bank & Trust has announced a partnership with Mission: St. Louis to open a financial services support center with a Video Teller Machine at the non-profit organization's office, located at 3108 N. Grand Blvd. in St. Louis.

Alan Bergfeld Joins Holland as Director of Business Development

From NY Times: It wasn't until the QuikTrip gas station was burned and looted on Aug. 10, 2014, that the protests began to take hold in the public consciousness. The day before, the body of Michael Brown, a young black man fatally shot by a white police officer, was left lying for hours on a street in Ferguson, Mo., while a disparate group of people gathered in anger.

Keeley Seeks Substitution After Three Judges Fail to Advance Litigation
From Madison-St. Clair Record: Three judges failed for more than a year to deal with an injury suit against L. Keeley Construction Inc., so Keeley decided to find a fourth judge. 
 
Keeley moved to substitute Circuit Judge Heinz Rudolf on July 16, a day after he continued a case management conference. Any party in an Illinois court can substitute one judge without cause if the judge has not made a substantial ruling.

Flooding Damage and Recovery: Repair Contracts Awarded
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded two more contracts today for flood recovery efforts in Buchanan and Gentry counties. These are in addition to the contracts awarded previously for repairs on U.S. Routes 159 and 136 along with Route 118.
 
State Sues Over Alleged Delays in Construction of SIUE Science Building
From Madison-St. Clair Record: Illinois is suing a construction company over alleged delays to the completion of the University of Southern Illinois' science building in Edwardsville. 
 
The state's Capital Development Board (CDB), which oversees the construction and rehabilitation of buildings, is suing Williams Brothers Construction Inc. (WBCI) over the $54 million, 140,000 square feet construction on the Edwardsville campus.
