As we approach the 2022 midterm elections, Thanksgiving, and other end-of-year celebrations, I am amazed at what a transformational year we have had already at the McCormack School since the fall semester started in September. AY’22–23 will be a pivotal year of strategic change on several fronts—at UMass Boston, in the Nation, and around the world. For example, just last week, the new president of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), Trevor Brown, inspired public and global affairs education and policy studies academic leaders like me. Brown, also the John Glenn Dean of the College of Public Affairs at Ohio State University, did so by presenting what he termed a paradox for public affairs education in the 21st century. He suggested that while the field of public education has the potential to be a force for progressive change that delivers value to the broader public, our public service and affairs education doesn’t seem to have made much impact, given the reality that “public support and confidence in public institutions and democracy is at an all-time low” (Trevor Brown’s remarks as the new president of NASPAA, delivered October 21, 2022). On October 4, the John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies hosted a Welcome Event for its new and returning students, featuring a keynote address by Joe Kennedy III. Kennedy represented Massachusetts's 4th congressional district from 2013 to 2021.

On October 20, 2022, the John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies at UMass Boston, in cooperation with WCVB-TV (Channel 5), hosted a focus group which streamed into the second Gubernatorial Debate on Thursday, October 20th at 8:00 pm EST.

Current Student Success
Samiya Khalid, a doctoral student in the Public Policy program, completed her one-year fellowship with Mayor Wu’s office in August, completing a chapter of her career that she described as “important for my professional growth.”

As the Student Chair of the Dean’s Office Student Success (DOSS) Ambassadors, PhD in Global Governance and Human Security student Jiedine Phanbuh is wholeheartedly committed to enacting initiatives on behalf of all McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies students to better serve their needs.

As it enters its 12th year in operation, the Center for Peace, Democracy, and Development (CPDD) will continue its practice of fostering hands-on action and student engagement through sustained research on conflict and human security concerns in and beyond Boston.
|

|
Two new lecturers have joined the John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies in the Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security, and Global Governance: Cecilia Idika-Kalu and Samantha Lakin.

The Department of Gerontology welcomes Jaqueline Contrera Avila, PhD, to campus this fall as our newest faculty member. Avila is a population health researcher with experience in U.S. and Latin America population-based data. |

Dr. Caitlin E. Coyle closed a “full circle” this year when she became the official Director of the Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging in August. Dr. Coyle’s Center affiliation began during its earliest days while working on her PhD studies in Gerontology in 2012.

The Edward J. Collins, Jr. Center for Public Management at the McCormack School will embark on several new developments this fiscal year, continuing its involvement with cities and towns across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and, in some cases, other states in New England.
