Dean's Message

Happy New Year and Lunar New Year, and welcome to the second half of AY 22–23 at UMass Boston. The 53rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Memorial Breakfast offered introspect for what may be a promising sign for 2023. A group of us from the McCormack School, including M-RET co-chairs: Professors Johnson and Nsiah-Jefferson, McCormack Scholars Student Chair Jiedine Phanbuh, Student Success Manager Dr. Christopher Graham, and several of our students attended the historic breakfast held at the Boston Convention Center - the first in-person MLK gathering since the pandemic. We shared with each other how motivated we were by what we observed and heard from Boston’s pre-eminent legislators and community organizers at the event. Read the dean's message here.

Dr. Edward Alan Miller, Professor and Chair of the Department of Gerontology, reflected recently on the hallmark that sets UMass Boston’s PhD program in Gerontology apart from other aging studies initiatives: its commitment to policy and public service.

McCormack’s Interim Dean Rita Kiki Edozie celebrated the publication of her newest book in August, the culmination of six years of research and writing. Co-authored with Dr. Moses Khisa, Africa’s New Global Politics: Regionalism in International Relations offers a view of how the countries of Africa have acted as a collective to shape international relations and influence the global arena more and more in recent decades.
Student Success

The Dean’s Office Student Success (DOSS) program hosted its annual DOSS Town Hall last December. Representative of the McCormack School’s community engagement and communal decision-making, DOSS Town Hall meetings allow members of the McCormack community to come together to ensure that all voices—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members across McCormack—can be heard.
Current Student Success

This year’s Africa Scholars Forum event in December featured current PhD candidate Krystal Gayle O’Neill as its keynote Winnie Mandela Speaker... where she presented on the movie The Woman King and the representation of Black women in popular media.
Alum Student Success

Hassan Chehab graduated from the McCormack School’s Master’s in International Relations program last May but discovered a way to stay in touch.
Donors Making Impact

This fall, McCormack hosted the return of a familiar face, who is now a silent donor to the university, former Provost Winston Langley. In the fall of 2022, Dr. Langley returned to UMass Boston as an honored guest featured in a two-part radio broadcast through the McCormack School’s partnership with WUMB Radio, McCormack Speaks @ WUMB
Staff Spotlight
The McCormack School kicked off the spring 2023 semester with a brand new Associate Dean for Research and Student Engagement, Dr. Marlene Kim.
Jack Li, Graduate Program Administrator for Outreach and Recruitment at the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs (DPPPA), is a “double Beacon”—that is, he graduated from UMass Boston with a BA and MBA in management, specializing in marketing and information systems.
Centers Making an Impact
Fifty years into the women’s rights movement, this is a moment to reassess what we need to do, what that needs to look like, and how we can get there, keynote speaker Teresa Younger told almost two hundred women attending the 5th Biennial New England Women’s Policy Conference.
As a center committed to eliminating inequities related to race, gender, class, and economic status, the Center for Social Policy (CSP) upholds the legacy of many of its prominent fellows through its continued focus on community-engaged research.
