McGeorge International

Greetings!

On behalf of the International Board of Advisors (IBOA), we are very pleased to bring you the second issue of McGeorge International! We have interviews with three more of your fellow alumni and additional news and announcements.

McGeorge International

In this second issue, we are pleased to continue the idea from the first issue of featuring three alumni. In this issue, we highlight: 1) Henry Liao (LLM 1998), a corporate lawyer in Guangzhou, China, and a member of the IBOA and the Action Committee 2) Carolina Rondón Chacón (LLM 2017), an immigration lawyer originally from Colombia, who practices in Las Vegas, Nevada; and 3) Domenico Marino (JD 2004), who practices aviation law and is based in Martina Franca, Italy. If you share practice area, geography, year at McGeorge, or other interest with any of our interviewees, please feel free to be in touch with them. Their interviews, which are linked here, include their e-mail addresses. One of our goals with the newsletter is to create a community of McGeorge alumni international practitioners. We hope that you will take advantage of learning about your fellow alumni and contact those with whom you have common interests.

IBOA news

We welcome in-coming Chair Keith Pershall (LLM 1995) and Vice-Chair Gordian Hasselblatt (LLM 1995)! On the heels of the wonderful alumni reunion in Prague, Keith and Gordian, both long-time members of the Board, look forward to building a closer working relationship between the Board and McGeorge, and look forward to assisting McGeorge in further developing its international programs. We would also like to express our appreciation for the work of Kate Baragona (JD 1990, LLM 1991) as Chair and Nora Klug (LLM 2001) as Vice-Chair of the IBOA over the last several years. As Keith commented: “Our heartfelt thanks go to out-going Chair Kate Baragona and Vice-Chair Nora Klug for their leadership, creativity and inspiring enthusiasm during times made challenging by, amongst other circumstances, the worldwide COVID pandemic. We look forward to their continuing guidance and participation on the Board.”

The Board is a completely volunteer organization. We all greatly appreciate the time and effort that the IBOA officers and members dedicate to international students and programs. McGeorge is very fortunate to have had excellent IBOA participation over the years.

Prague Reunion

On June 7-9, 2024, McGeorge hosted its bi-annual alumni reunion in Prague, Czech Republic. More than 60 alumni from around the world attended the event. The reunion launched with a cocktail reception on the beautiful terrace of the CMS law firm, followed by a dinner at the iconic restaurant Obecní dům. On Saturday morning, three hours of CLE were offered to attendees. Professor Mary-Beth Moylan, the immediate past Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, presented on the “The Mechanics of Cleaning up Politics: Do ethics rules, impeachment, and recall elections work to ensure good government?” Board Chair Kate Baragona, Senior Infrastructure Finance Specialist in the Financial Solutions Group of the World Bank, presented on some of the work at the World Bank, and Rob Taylor, Energy Sector Specialist at Deloitte Consulting USA and Chief of Party of USAID’s “Securing Georgia’s Energy Future” project in Tbilisi Georgia, presented on “Georgia’s path to EU full membership.” The afternoon was filled with a walking tour of old town immediately followed by a dinner cruise. Sunday was left unstructured so that everyone could enjoy beautiful Prague.

The reunion is a wonderful opportunity to meet other international alumni, and to form professional and personal connections. One of the attendees and a key organizer of the reunion was Veronika Plešková (LLM 2009), who practices employment, immigration and corporate law in her own firm VP Legal in Prague. Veronika described what the reunion meant to her: “The reunion was a blast thanks to all the wonderful people who attended the event. Irrespective of the year of graduation, every guest was very friendly and not only gathered with former mates and professors but made new friends across all generations. The uniqueness of the group was in their willingness to share knowledge and experience, and to inspire each other. Openness to share our life stories and professional experience with others even created some business opportunities for the alums. This is precious, in particular, when bearing in mind that the legal industry is considered very competitive worldwide. The chance to participate in organization of this event in beautiful Prague was a real honor and I am truly touched by all the positive feedback we have received to date.”

All in all, the reunion was a great success, and we hope that many more of you will attend the next one!

Action Committee

In our first issue, we explained that the IBOA has created an Action Committee to take on specific projects. One project was the creation of this newsletter! The Action Committee has also undertaken to find and update the contact information of the many McGeorge International alumni from around the world with whom McGeorge has lost contact. To this end, the Action Committee has asked, and many members of the IBOA have agreed, to make a personal effort to reach out to alumni from their time at McGeorge. You can also help us, by filling out this Personal Information Form. Please also share the link with any other alumni with whom you are in contact. We are grateful for your help. We want to make sure that you get all the information about McGeorge activities, including the fun ones. Things, such as our reunion in Prague, where fun was had by all!

Some of you have already volunteered to work with the Action Committee in the next couple of years. If you would like to find out more about what it entails, please contact Iván Morales at imorales@icorpcon.com.

Global Center for Business & Development

On October 4 and 5, 2024, McGeorge’s Global Center, VIT University Law School in Chennai, India and University of Salzburg, Austria will host a conference titled, “Emerging Issues in Intellectual Property Law” in Salzburg. The conference features 25 presentations by professors from the United States, the EU, the UK, China, South Korea and India. Professors from University of Nottingham, Georgetown University, Wake Forest University, University of California, George Mason University, Texas A and M University, University of Akron and many other universities will participate. The conference includes a workshop for students held at the University of Salzburg and a presentation of research at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich, Germany. Professor Michael Mireles from McGeorge is helping to organize the conference. Both McGeorge and Board Member Henry Liao (through Schinders Law) are co-sponsors of the conference.
