McLaren is Family

(Pictured left to right) Lana Mesak, RN, Nursing Education; Kristen Begley, RN, ICU.

Coming soon, McLaren Flint will feature employees on social media. These employees are proof positive that McLaren is family. Lana Mesack, RN, Nursing Education, and her daughter, Kristen Begley, RN, ICU, are proof of that. Both Lana and Kristen had life-changing experiences that led them to their nursing careers.

“My mom became ill, and she was sick for a long time,” said Lana. “I watched the nurses care for her and saw the difference that they made for her, myself, and our entire family. I wanted to be a part of something bigger like that, so I decided to become a nurse to help others when they were at their worst."

“I went off to college not knowing what I wanted to do,” said Kristen. “Then, one day on campus, this girl who was riding her bike in front of me crashed, hit her head, and fell unconscious. I rushed over to help her, called for an ambulance, and stayed with her until they took her to the hospital. Later that day, I realized I might make a great nurse.”

You will hear more from Lana and Kristen this week on McLaren Flint's Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

Respect: Everyone Deserves It

"Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners." -Laurence Sterne.

We show respect through our tone of voice, the words we choose, and even our body language. The McLaren Flint Universal Skills team wants to remind us that every interaction with others is an opportunity to show respect. Making eye contact, not turning away or looking at our phones during a conversation, and really listening to what someone else is saying are all signs of respect. Everyone- coworkers, patients, and visitors- wants to be seen and heard, and how we respond is critical to establishing mutual respect.

Put Safety First When You Check Out the Total Eclipse

Next Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It will start on Mexico's Pacific coast at 11:07 a.m. and be visible in parts of southeast Michigan by the afternoon. The rest of us will see a partial eclipse during that time. Total or partial, if you want to see the eclipse, you must take precautions. Family Medicine Assistant Chief Resident Bentolholda Atef shares some important tips for protecting your eyes here.

Weekly Nutrition Tip: Should You Take a Multivitamin?

Multivitamins are actually a great option for people who aren't getting all the recommended daily nutrients in their diets. However, McLaren Flint dietitians caution that taking any supplement in excess can pose serious health risks.

"It's best to get bloodwork done to check for deficiencies before taking any supplement," said Clinical Dietitian Marisa Young. "For healthy people, supplements are not meant to be long-term. So, routine follow-ups with a doctor are recommended to monitor serum levels. Common short-term vitamin supplements are A, D, E, and K, and minerals are calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc."
