McLaren Proton Therapy Center Celebrates

Treating 1000th Patient

Just over five years after opening its doors, the McLaren Proton Therapy Center marked a huge milestone with a special celebration. The Center's 1000th patient finished treatments in January. Former patients, staff, and the local media gathered on February 15th to talk about the Center's accomplishments and plans for expansion. Growing the center will allow more patients access to this ground-breaking cancer treatment.

Less Risk of Side Effects Gave Michigan Man the Courage to Take on Prostate Cancer

Bob Floria's PSA test results raised red flags, causing a life insurance company to deny him coverage. However, Bob did not follow up with his doctor until four years later, when he started to struggle with fatigue and frequent urination.

When a biopsy revealed Bob had cancer, he started researching his options. After talking to radiation oncologist Dr. Christian Hyde, Bob believed proton therapy was the best choice for him. Read Bob's story here and find out what convinced him.

Weekly Nutrition Tip: DASH for Heart Health

February is Heart Month and high blood pressure is one of the most significant heart disease risk factors. McLaren Flint dietitians recommend the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.

"Studies show the DASH diet can help reduce high blood pressure or prevent it from happening in the first place," said Clinical Dietitian Marisa Young.

The DASH diet emphasizes:

  • Reducing sodium intake by sticking to foods with less than 300 mg per serving.
  • Getting more potassium from fruits and vegetables.
  • Including low-fat dairy products for calcium.
  • Lowering total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, while getting more unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids.

Crisis Prevention and De-Escalation Training Deadlines Near

If you have not completed the Aegis Crisis Prevention and De-escalation Training required for your department, the deadlines are coming. The low-risk, one-hour online sessions, assigned to all employees is due Wednesday February 28.

Training for employees in high-risk areas and refresher high-risk training for those who completed it in 2023 will also be due soon. You can learn more about the schedule here.

Important Change to Fall Prevention Protocals

McLaren Flint is dedicated to keeping our patients and team members safe by providing appropriate tools to assist in patient handling. Effective February 20, gait belts will no longer be stocked on the linen carts delivered to the units. Gait belts will now be stocked in the clean supply rooms on every unit and will be supplied by McLaren Flint's central supply chain. This will ensure our team members will always have gait belts on hand to assist with patients.

For the complete gait belt use policy from the Falls Committee, click here.
