Staying One Step Ahead of Cervical Cancer May Have Saved Young Mom's Life

After a Pap smear showed something suspicious, Monica Peters' doctor recommended she have the screening annually to monitor for cervical cancer. Monica tried her best to get those screenings done on schedule, and it was sometimes a challenge for the young mom with a full-time job. It is a good thing she stayed on top of things because a biopsy in May 2023 revealed Monica had cervical cancer.

Just getting that phone call was pretty detrimental and scary,” Monica said. “I remember feeling like I couldn’t function with the diagnosis."

Monica's cancer was stage two and had already begun to spread, so she dove headfirst into the fight of her life.

Read about Monica's cancer journey and how she helped save her own life here.

Changes are Coming When You Punch In or Out on the Timeclock

The system is transitioning to a new version of Kronos, and all McLaren Health Care subsidiaries will be moving to a standard approach related to Timeclock Rounding Rules. Effective February 11, 2024, all in and out punches will be rounded to the nearest 1/10 of an hour. Rounding to 1/10th of an hour uses 3-minute intervals. For the first 3 minutes, we will round down the given time, and the second 3 minutes will be rounded up to the nearest 6 minutes.

Examples:

Scheduled start time is 7:00 AM. In-punches between 6:57 AM and 7:02 AM are rounded to 7:00 AM.

Scheduled end time is 7:30 PM. Out-punches between 7:27 PM and 7:32 PM are rounded to 7:30 PM.

Weekly Nutrition Tip: Eating for Cancer Prevention

Your diet can impact your cancer risk. What you eat every day makes a difference. Take colon cancer, for example.

"Whole grains and fiber may help reduce the risk of colon cancer by increasing "good" gut bacteria and supporting a strong immune system. To increase your dietary fiber intake, try using rolled oats or crushed whole wheat bran cereal in place of breadcrumbs and using barley, wild rice, quinoa, or farro in soups and salads," said McLaren Flint Clinical Dietitian Marisa Young.

January's Outstanding Employee of the Month

Karla Upthegrove is McLaren Flint's January Outstanding Employee of the Month. Karla is a physician information analyst in Medical Staff Services. She has worked behind the scenes at McLaren Flint for more than 20 years. She is one of the first people new physicians meet when they join the McLaren staff and is responsible for new physician orientation.

A nominator thinks it is high time for Karla to be recognized because she not only provides vital assistance to the medical staff but is also there to help out in other departments.

Karla is always professional, polite, organized, and detail-oriented,” the nominator said. “She is very responsive and completes some of the quickest data pulls around. Karla is thoughtful in her decision-making, responsible, hardworking, and dependable.”
