GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM ADDS INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY

The hospital received approval to add an internal medicine residency to join its established family medicine program.

Six internal medicine residents will join the hospital’s GME program when the program year begins July 1, 2024. A three-year program, six internal medicine residents will be added every year, reaching its full maturation in 2026 with 18 residents.

“Primary care is a resource that guides our overall health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Kenneth Parsons, McLaren Bay Region Chief Medical Officer. “With the addition of this training program, we will increase patient access to this vital service along with opportunity to add additional attending physicians to the Great Lakes Bay Region upon completion of their residency program. This is a great achievement made possible by the vision and dedication of a great team. McLaren Bay Region is proud to have positioned our organization to offer this service to the community.”

Internist Parul Sud, MD, will serve as program director of internal medicine. Additional GME core faculty include Hira Iftikhar, MD, (Associate Program Director), Rajesh Dandamudi, MD, Elizabeth Pionk, DO, Amanda Gomes, MD and Tazeen Ahmed, MD.

“Developing a new GME program is a significant undertaking, but hospital leadership and our medical staff have us positioned to see that it is a success,” Dr. Sud said. “We are able to offer our residents an excellent environment in which to train and an organization that has long been a pillar in this community. We are very excited for this initial class and the experience that awaits them.”

ASIST – Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training presented by the Barb Smith Suicide Resource and Response Network: August 22-23

Location: Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Parish: 423 Cedar St., Standish, MI 48658

About This Training

ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. Skills learned in one environment are transferable to others, creating a life-saving impact across the community. Help is possible when skills, opportunity, and safety are present. When these are available throughout the different facets of someone’s life, they’re more likely to receive help.

– Live instruction, audiovisuals, and simulation

– Trusted by professionals yet learnable by anyone

– Built-in safety resources and features

Who Should Attend

Anyone can experience thoughts of suicide. By giving participants the skills to help friends, family members, colleagues, and clients stay alive, ASIST supports suicide-safer communities. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, no formal training is needed to attend the workshop. Anyone 16 or older can learn and use the model.

Continuing Education Credits are available. For a full flier, including a full agenda for both days, click HERE

SAFETY THROUGH APPROPRIATE

ANTIBIOTIC USE

Team Bands Together to Enhance Safety Through Appropriate Antibiotic Use

The Joint Commission released a new standard aimed at providers, motivated to raise the standard of patient health and safety through the appropriate use of antibiotics.

A topic of great importance, the McLaren Pharmacy team began searching for ways to increase awareness of this new standard to McLaren care facilities across Michigan.

The team at McLaren University reached out to offer their assistance, creating an interdisciplinary team comprised of physicians, infection control, nursing, McLaren Pharmacy, and McLaren University.

Assessing the current environment, learning needs, and collecting the latest research and evidence-based clinical practice data, Dr. John Sangeorzan (McLaren Northern Michigan infectious disease specialist), Matt Faust (McLaren University Clinical Specialists), and Linda Deitering (McLaren Pharmacy Clinical Manager) turned their findings over to McLaren University.

McLaren University’s Faust, Courtney Cook, Sheila Martinez, Ashely Stachowski, and Sally Aluia strategized the best way in which to deliver those finds, ultimately designing an engaging course to effectively impart physicians, nurses, and all learners with the knowledge they would need to continue providing excellent care.

McLaren University Senior Clinical Specialist Lisa Hoover developed a pair of eLearning courses using interactive elements and real-world examples that best communicated antimicrobial stewardship.

Meeting the compliance requirement, the team that originally came together to enhance physicians’, nurses’, and pharmacists’ understanding of the topic, leaving them better informed on the prevention of unnecessary antibiotic use, further protecting the health of the patients we serve.
