Dr. Francis X. Bride, Jr. Plaque Unveiled

The McNeese Foundation honored the late Dr. Francis X. Bride, Jr. with a plaque unveiling and reception dedicated to his impact on the University.

The McNeese Foundation has received approximately $6 million of a

$9 million planned gift from Bride’s estate. The bequest established the Francis X. Bride Scholarship in Science and Health Professions and the Francis X. Bride Professorship in Science and Health Professions.

“We are incredibly grateful and humbled by Dr. Bride’s generosity and faith he placed in us by making this gift,” said Dr. Wade Rousse, Vice President for University Advancement and Executive Vice President for the McNeese Foundation. “His gift will positively impact the life of every student in the College of Nursing and Health Professions now and in the years to come.”

The Francis X. Bride Scholarship in Science and Health Professions was awarded for the first time in the 2021-22 academic year. In the first year, 50 students received nearly $200,000 in scholarship awards that assisted with tuition, books, fees and other course-related expenses.

“We’ve had students tell us it means they don’t have to put their tuition on a credit card with extremely high interest,” Ralynn Castete, Director of Scholarships at McNeese explained. “Others shared they can work one less shift a week now that they are in clinicals while another said they can reduce their work schedule by five hours a week to help their children with their homework.”

A recognition plaque in Hardtner Hall is a tribute to Bride and a permanent reminder to students, faculty, staff and all who enter the building of the legacy he created. For more information about the College of Nursing and Health Professionals visit the website

Cowboy Closet Is Open

The Cowboy Closet is officially open.

The Cowboy Closet supports students by alleviating financial barriers of professional clothing for interviews, internships and professional development activities. Students can make an appointment for a one-on-one consultation with a staff member in the boutique-style space. Cowboy Closet provides gently used suits, scrubs, McNeese polo shirts, shoes, slacks, button down shirts, blouses, dresses, belts, ties and outerwear for students. The Closet is open to all McNeese students and is housed in the Burton Business Center, Room 211B.

The Closet staff are still accepting monetary donations for display stands, cleaning supplies and cameras. Sponsorships are available for a dressing room mirror, garment bags, tie rack, jewelry rack and a table covering. There are several ways to make a tax deductible donation. Mail a check payable to McNeese Cowboy Closet, McNeese Foundation, Box 91989, Lake Charles, LA 70609, go to mcneesefoundation.org and click on give now or drop off a check to Burton Business Center, Room 439, on the McNeese campus.
