Mr. Dave Mueller
Principal's Corner

For me, today is about looking to the future. This evening, we celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2020. In the gospel reading, as Jesus intercedes for the apostles by asking the Father to "consecrate them in the truth," I think about the ways in which parents and teachers have lovingly pointed our graduates toward eternal truths and eternal relationship with God. Before and after Mass, Abby Jarrold and Ellie Rudolph will speak on behalf of the Class of 2020 about how McNicholas has prepared them to continue their educations and serve others in the years ahead - with joy. So I'm confident about two parts of the future: eternity and the decades ahead!

What about the more immediate future? Next week our Classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023 will visit campus to return their books for 2019-20. It will be wonderful to see them. No sooner do they return their books than we give them instructions for summer reading, which are included in this newsletter. And our welcome to summer reading heartily includes the Class of 2024. For 2020-21, we look forward to scheduled classes on campus available for all students, with flexibility for those who need to participate in classes from home. As noted in the newsletter last week, the emblem for the McNick experience next school year is the CONVERTIBLE, a safe green machine that provides the same sweet ride whether it's sunny or rainy, with the top going up and down seamlessly. I'm looking forward to the ride!
Baccalaureate Mass tonight at 7 p.m.

As we celebrate our beloved Class of 2020 throughout this week, please join together with your McNick family to "tune in" for the Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2020 at 7:00 pm tonight on the McNicholas You Tube channel.

The Baccalaureate Mass for the Archbishop McNicholas High School Class of 2020

Many, many, many thanks to our gracious presider, Fr. Dave Endres, to soon-to-be-retired Social Studies teacher Frank Lowden for the bagpiping, and to Liturgy Choir Director Kim Zang for providing beautiful music. Many, many, many thanks also to our video team of Matt Wehrman and Barb Gillming for making such an extraordinary and unprecedented celebration possible.

Fr. Dave has accompanied the Class of 2020 in many ways over the course of their four years as Rockets, and it is fitting that he is the one to deliver the homily at their Baccalaureate Mass. Also included are reflections from Abby Jarrold and Ellie Rudolph and vocals from Brianna Taylor.

Academic Awards

McNicholas High School traditionally hosts an Academic Awards day where the school community gathers to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of our students over the past school year.

This year, the students at McNicholas have once again impressed us with their talents.  We recognize students who scored well on standardized tests, showed their creativity through their artwork, or worked hard in the classroom. Seniors have already received these awards, and the underclassmen will receive their awards when they drop off their tablets.

While we yearn for the time when we can all gather again for events like this, we want to take this time to virtually recognize the efforts of the heart and soul of the McNicholas community, our students.

Summer Reading announced for all students
Where will you go this summer through the pages of a book?
COVID-19 may have limited our summer options for getting out and about, but you can travel anywhere you want through the pages of a great book! For your summer reading assignment, the English Department decided that Summer 2020 should be the time to choose a book that meets you where you are right now. Struggling with something? Maybe a self-help book. Need to escape? Choose a fantasy novel. Sad your vacation was cancelled? Read a travelogue. Choose a book that meets you where you are and read it by the first day of school. Once we return to the classroom, you will be completing an assignment about your book, but for now, just enjoy it.

Click here for more information, including book recommendations and additional requirements for AP Literature and AP Language students.
