McNicholas represented at Catholic Schools Week Mass

McNicholas student representatives joined students and teachers from Cincinnati-area schools at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains on Tuesday morning for the 2016  Catholic Schools Week  Mass.  Archbishop of Cincinnati Dennis M. Schnurr was the celebrant. In his homily, the archbishop urged students to hold tight to the "gift of faith" as their lives change into adulthood.

"Our Catholic schools set and achieve high academic standards and high graduation rates but, even more, our Catholic schools equip our students with the eyes of faith and an understanding that their talents are God-given and given for a definite purpose," he said.

American Legion Boys and Girls State Programs
Each year, McNicholas High School juniors have the possibility of participating in the American Legion Boys State, and Girls State programs. This year we are looking for any interested junior boys or girls that would like to participate in the program.

At American Legion Boys State , participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students. Each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.

American Legion Auxiliary Girls State   is a nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love for God and Country. Since the inception of the Girls State program in 1937, nearly one million young people have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local government works.

Any current junior boys or girls that are interested in participating in the Boys or Girls State programs should notify their Social Studies teacher by February 5 th . Students will then be interviewed by a member of the American Legion to determine a candidate to represent the American Legion post at the Boys and Girls State programs.

McNicholas Mock Trial Team Advances to Regional Competition

Congratulations to the Mock Trial Team for winning both of their trials at the district competition on January 29! The competition was held at the Hamilton County Courthouse, where the team presented both the Prosecution and Defense sides in separate trials. The case this year involved a 4th Amendment issue on whether a police officer was justified in using deadly force against a teen armed with a toy bow and arrow. The McNick team is one of only a few teams out of 48 total teams in the competition that will advance to the regional competition on February 19.

The team was awarded all four individual awards in their trials. The awards for Outstanding Attorney were awarded to Jackson Durm and Sarah Standiford, and the awards for Outstanding Witness were awarded to Sarah Standiford and Tess Forman. Other team members who all gave a top performance to win the team competitions include Brian Gauch, Will Babb, Jared Taylor, and Emily Potter. Mr. Frank Lowden serves as faculty advisor, and Mrs. L. Weigand serves as legal advisor for the team.

Geometry students survey with homemade clinometers

Geometry students In Mrs. Brothers' classes have been surveying the area with their homemade clinometers.  The students used their clinometers to measure the angle of elevation to the top of several objects around campus.  They then used trigonometry to calculate the heights. (Sophomore Veronica Menendez uses her homemade clinometer.)

McNicholas' Coaches vs. Cancer Week-Feb. 2-5

The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to help finish the fight against cancer. McNicholas will be raising funds to support both the American Cancer Society and the Ell Family as junior Adrian continues her fight against lymphoma discovered this summer.
You can get involved with the Coaches vs. Cancer effort in several ways this upcoming week:

Wall of Hope
Students are asked to complete a card in memory or support of someone they know touched by cancer. Donations are accepted but not necessary. All proceeds from the Wall of Hope donations go toward the Shave the Teacher Challenge.

Shave the Teacher Challenge
Throughout the week, students may make donations in the Café and Student Union in an effort to raise at least $725. When donations from the lunch collections and Wall of Hope donations reach at least $725, teachers David Sandman, John Chadwell, and Jeff Mulvey will shave their heads, and Jeff Hutchinson-Smyth will shave his beard during Friday's Catholic Schools Week assembly.

Purcell Marian vs. McNicholas Men's Basketball Game-Feb. 5
Split the Pot proceeds during all three men's basketball games as well as money made from three-point contests at halftime of the freshmen and JV games will go toward the effort as well.

Online Donation
You can make an online donation to the McNicholas effort by following this link.

The funds collected through all of these efforts will be split between the American Cancer Society and McNicholas' Ell family. Please be supportive and generous and help finish the fight against cancer!

McNick at Night Special Appeal announced
Each year, McNicholas does a special appeal after all the live auction items have been sold. This year's special appeal will be for improvements to our website. The website is the centerpiece of marketing efforts for our school and a cornerstone of communication. From prospective families and community sports fans to current families and alumni, McNicholas' website is the central starting point for information. Our website is in great need of better navigation, more flexible content management options, and greater opportunities to integrate visuals into its design. These improvements will allow our parents, alumni, and prospective families the opportunity to integrate with our community better by finding information more quickly, watching video or viewing photos of our students' remarkable accomplishments, or more easily volunteering time, talent or treasure to support our mission.  With the support of the McNicholas community during the special appeal, our goal is to have the refurbished website operational by the start of the next school year. A new website would be an exciting new face to our school and an opportunity to reinforce the foundation for digital communication and marketing efforts. Thanks for your support of McNick at Night and our efforts to reinvest in our school.
