Connecting the Dots with Shawn Young

Luke Shropshire '10 Gannon McHugh '14

In this edition of Connecting the Dots, we go back about 15 years. This story starts out much like the story from back in March, but moves in a new direction. It seems like many of my stories get started from the days of scouting. As I was just moving into the Boy Scout troop with my oldest son, there was a scout just finishing up his scouting career and working on his Eagle Badge. His name was Luke Shropshire '10, and he was a junior at McNicholas at the time. I can't say I really knew him well from scouting, but we were part of the same scouting family. Move ahead to the present and I have been blessed to work with Annette McHugh. She puts together our fabulous McNick at Night. She also happens to be the mother of Gannon McHugh '14. And as it so happens Gannon and Luke are neighbors. While they did not know each other growing up, fate would bring them together. Luke went to U.C. and graduated in three years with a degree in the hospitality industry. While in school, he discovered a new interest that would take his life in an entirely new direction. Luke became passionate about brewing beer. According to Gannon, Luke's basement looked like something out of movie set the perfect mad scientist laboratory. Luke would be in his back yard collecting spores and yeast to create the perfect beer. He seems to have found the right ingredients. He entered a brewing contest and won first place out of 350 contestants. Shortly after the contest, he was hired at Mt. Carmel Brewery. After working there for over a year, and creating more beer, Luke was hired at the new Streetside Brewery on Riverside Drive, near Lunken Airport. Luke has a passion for sour beers. As he describes, "these are very unique, and loved by the beer nerds" to which he proudly claims membership. "I can work 70 hours a week at Streetside, and still find time to go home and experiment five hours a week with newer beer creations".

To market their very unique beers, Steetside Brewery wanted to put them into some very unique cans. Enter into the picture his neighbor and fellow Rocket, Gannon. Gannon is currently in the DAAP program at U.C. He is a very gifted artist. I see his artwork every day, when I go down the hall to see his mother. So one night while they were all sitting around the driveway discussing life, Luke asked Gannon if he would like to design a can for them, and a new partnership of Rockets was born. Gannon is now working on his third can for Streetside. "I can't wait to see 'Chillin with Bob Ross' ".

All of the beers have a name that is hard to forget. Luke likes to drop little clues into the names to see if anyone catches what he is doing. He loves the amount of detail that Gannon puts into the artwork. From my point of view, they both love what they do, and love perfecting the detail. And quite honestly from what I tasted, I think they got it right. It was great getting together with the two of them the other week. I really enjoyed the brewery, the tour, the beers! And of course talking about Rocket High.  I encourage all of you to go down some night and support your Rockets.

If you are getting together with your class for lunches or dinners, maybe you have a tradition that your Rocket friends have been doing for a while, or maybe like Luke and  Gannon, you are building something together, I would love to come out and put you in the next newsletter. The Class of '02 pays tribute to classmate Nick Erdy.

The 12th annual Nick Erdy golf outing will take place on Saturday, June 17 at Deer Track Golf Course. If you and your friends/family are golfers, this would be a fantastic outing to support. The Erdy family continues their generosity by providing scholarships to a graduating senior and an underclassmen here at McNIcholas.  The Class of '02 decided that they would host their reunion on that same day to pay tribute to Nick.  They are encouraging classmates to remember Nick, by signing up for the outing, and then coming out to the reunion later that night to Rhinegeist Brewery.  The class is also collecting for the Alumni Scholarship Fund, all donations made will be in honor of Nick Erdy.  When asked about this decision, Mara McCormick Proctor '02 said,"I still think of Nick often - his service and sacrifice, and the friend and classmate he was to all of us. I hope our classmates will take advantage of the annual golf outing and 15-year reunion being on the same day and attend both events. It will be a great day to remember our friend and reconnect with each other".

If you are interested in playing in the golf outing please click here.

Christa Hyson '05
Project: Not Even Once
Christa Hyson is doing amazing things!  She is one of eight Cincinnatians to be awarded a grant from People's Liberty.  They provide opportunities to implement innovative community development projects in Greater Cincinnati.  Christa has developed a project called Not Even Once. She will be implementing a drug abuse prevention program at Oyler Elementary School, a CPS school. Christa is a Cincinnati boomerang and a self-proclaimed extroverted introvert. Born & raised in Mt. Washington, she received her bachelors in communications and public relations from Xavier University. She has worked for the Department of Defense, received a master's degree in public health and currently works in public health for the Cincinnati Health Department. Christa now lives in Clifton.

Her project: Not Even Once aims to implement HOPE (Health and Opioid Abuse Prevention Education) curriculum to a Cincinnati Public School. The Ohio Department of Education has approved certain curriculums to educate and prevent future heroin and opioid overdoses and users, but Cincinnati Public Schools don't have any such thing implemented. Cincinnati is the unfortunate epicenter for heroin and opioid overdoses. Deaths by heroin are 100% preventable, and prevention is key-key to saving money, key to saving lives, and the most important part of that prevention model is stopping youth from ever starting. Not Even Once has the ability leave a sustainable impact on the greater Cincinnati community.
