Connecting the Dots with Shawn Young
In this edition of Connecting the Dots, we are going to introduce you to a member of the Class of 1984, who is a trauma-warrior and is using her triumphs to spread her "Story of Hope." Teri Kamphaus Wellbrock '84 had attended another parochial school her freshman year after receiving a scholarship offer, but switched to McNicholas a few days into her sophomore year, working in the McNick business office and Guardian Angels rectory in the evenings, in order to pay her own tuition. Leaving an all-girls school and coming to the co-ed school seemed like a better fit. Teri was a good student, working hard to get straight A's and having as much fun as possible.
After graduating in 1984, Teri attended the University of Cincinnati; however, she took a break to marry and start a family. She returned to UC to graduate magna cum laude in 1999 with a bachelors of science in psychology. On the outside, the resume would look pretty straightforward and very successful. She started working in the children's services field (in teaching roles and eventually the mental health division of Child Focus). In 2005, she and her husband, at the time, embarked on a business idea. During Desert Storm, a company in Australia developed a way to treat the blades of a helicopter to protect them from being sand-blasted in the desert. From that idea, Teri and her husband decided that they could apply this technology to cars to protect them as well. So they created their car protection company called InvizaShield, and have seen continued growth ever since. In 2015, after being a mostly mobile unit, providing service at local dealerships, Teri decided it was time to move out of the garage to better serve their growing retail business and moved into a new facility located in Milford. Teri's most treasured job is being mom to three kids: John works with her at InvizaShield, Jake is headed into his senior year at the University of Dayton, and Madison is headed into 6th grade at St. Veronica.
But Teri's life has not been an easy ride. Her story has been one of abuse and several criminal attacks. I was truly shocked to hear all of the very negative things that Teri has experienced in her life, and yet I was amazed at how easily she could share her story, and how she has decided to use her pain to try to help others who have experienced trauma or battle anxiety. As Teri put it, "I want people to hear my story and know there is always hope. I want to shine a light into the dark spaces." Because of the complex trauma, Teri had experienced severe
panic attacks for over 25 years until starting EMDR Therapy at Cincinnati Trauma Connection in 2013. It is now her mission in life to share her story of hope and offer hope to those, particularly children, who most need it.

McNicholas High School's First 65th Class Reunion
Archbishop McNicholas High School welcomed the Class of 1952 back to campus this month; for the school's first 65th reunion. The Class of 1952 had 31 members. Twenty-one members are still alive, and twelve attended Mass in the school's Chapel and gathered for lunch in the school library afterwards. Sr. Janet Roesener '52 was principal of McNicholas from 1966 to 1970.
In 1915, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille established a day and boarding school for girls in Mt. Washington under the name of St. Joseph Academy. In 1950, Archbishop John Timothy McNicholas designated that the Academy would become a diocesan high school and directed that it would be the first coeducational parochial high school in the Cincinnati area. On January 15, 1951, Archbishop Karl J. Alter approved changing the name of the new coed institution to Archbishop McNicholas High School, and in September, boys started attending classes. While the Class of 1952 was an all-girls graduating class, they told stories about how great it was to have boys on campus before they left school.

Fitzpatrick '10 works with architect in Italy
Haley Fitzpatrick '10 will be leaving Cincinnati and working in Genoa, Italy. L
ast September through January of this year she interned with Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) through the University of Texas' Professional Residency Program (a 6-month internship). This truly fantastic experience and culminated with a full-time job after graduation.
Renzo Piano is a renowned architect from Genoa, Italy. He has a huge architectural footprint on the planet and has won many architecture awards, most notably the Pritzker Prize, the AIA Gold Medal, and the Sonning Prize. The Renzo Piano Building Workshop, based in Genoa, Paris, and New York, employs more than a hundred architects, engineers, and building specialists.
Before she left, Haley sent a message to her architecture teacher, Mel Gaskins about her wonderful memories in the art dept.
"In those high school days of discovering the world of architecture, I never would have thought that I'd be heading over to Genoa, Italy, to work for Renzo Piano Building Workshop.
I just can't help but think of how formative my experience was for me at McNick, especially your courses."

Alumni trip to Keeneland
The McNicholas Alumni Association is hosting the third annual bus trip to Keeneland. The trip will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017. At the present we only have
FOUR tickets left. The bus will leave McNicholas at 9:00 a.m. and return after the last race. The cost for this event is only $45 per person and includes the bus ride to and from Lexington, tickets to the races, light appetizers, and beverages for the ride! Once there, we will set up a tailgate area as well. Spots will go very fast for this event. You can either pay with credit card by

McNicholas Rocket Band Alumni
The current McNick Rocket Band would like to invite ALL Rocket Band/Color Guard alumni to join them in the stands at the football game on October 14 (1:00 pm game).
If you were part of the concert, jazz, pep band or marching band/color guard for 1, 2, 3 or all 4 years, please join us! We want as many band/color guard alumni to gather as possible. Alumni will join the current band to play the National Anthem, McNicholas fight song, and some pep tunes. If you still play your instrument, great! But even if you no longer play or even have your instrument, we still want you to join us!

Help us to honor our veterans
The McNicholas Military Memorial Committee would like to invite you to join us for the sixth annual Veterans Day breakfast. This event will take place o
n Friday, November 10. The breakfast will be in the Café and Student Union. To set aside parking spaces, please RSVP Shawn Young by November 7.
If you would be interested in joining our Military Committee, please contact Jim Hay at 513-236-7609 or jhay279786@aol.com. The committee does a lot of great work here at McNicholas. They host the breakfast on Veterans Day, organize a ceremony at McNicholas on Memorial Day, and host a dance in February. The dance helps raise funds for the upkeep of our military memorial and to raise funds for scholarships for deserving students. To date the Military Committee has raised over $70,000 dollars for scholarships. Five scholarships were offered last year at $1500 each. We would love to see you at the dance this year! More details will be coming as we get closer.

Criteria:
- Demonstrate leadership, commitment to academics and can demonstrate a sincere sense of patriotism through an essay, which is part of the application process
- Candidates who are part of a military family will be given special consideration
- Include one teacher recommendation
- Financial need is another criterion. If financial need is part of your application, please complete the PSAS by the set deadline.

We've got your back!
McNicholas volunteers assist athletes in National Veterans Wheelchair Games
This summer, Cincinnati was the host for the 37
th
Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG). Veterans from across the United States and even one team from Great Britain traveled to our city to compete in 18 adaptive sporting events such as swimming, bowling, trap shooting, basketball and quad rugby.
The games, which are co-sponsored by the Veterans Administration and Paralyzed Veterans of America, rely on thousands of volunteers to run smoothly, and 167 of those volunteers were students, coaches, former teachers, past and current parents, and alumni from Archbishop McNicholas High School. Former McNicholas teacher and NVWG volunteer coordinator Gwyn Bush as well as the McNicholas Service Club and a number of began recruiting volunteers in the spring to help with the event.

Alumni can help with Open House
McNicholas High School will be hosting our Open House on Sunday, October 15, from 14 p.m. If you are interested in helping us with our open house there are several ways that you can get involved. We would love to see our open house signs in alumni yards all over the city!
If you own a business, we would be able to drop off posters for you to put up in your business. If you are able to help us, please just stop up, lawn signs are in the main lobby, or we would be happy to bring signs out to you. If you need a sign delivered

Mike Walker '68 and Jayne Gunning Walker '67 have been together since 1967. For those of you that did not have Sister Roberta, thay makes 50 years (47 married)! They have two grown sons and seven grandchildren. Jayne has been working for Beacon Orthopaedics for 44 years and Mike has been working for St. Pius X Catholic Church as General Manager for 31 years. Longevity is their calling!
Teri Alering Rosenacker '71 retired from the US Post Office in 2009 after 25 years of service. She enjoyed six years of retirement with her wonderful husband Tom before he lost his very courageous battle with cancer. They have six children, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She stay busy these days with family, and friends. They enjoy camping and travel. Her advice to all is to love, appreciate and ENJOY EVERY DAY and ALL who are in your life.
Jan Schmidt '72 was Appointed Director of Pastoral Life & Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati on July 1, 2016, working in the Chancery Offices in downtown Cincinnati. In addition Fr. Jan was appointed the 17th Rector of the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains, effective July 1, 2017, with residence at the Cathedral.
James McNamara '77 was a Captain US Marines from 1981-1986. Then he became a supervisory special agent for the FBI from 1987-2012. He is now a Professor at George Washington University
Deborah Chase Simon '82 has been married to her husband Thomas for 22 years. They have an 18-year-old son who is a freshman at the University of Colorado in Denver, and twin 13-year-old girls who are freshmen at Evergreen High School. They have been in Evergreen, for 20 years were Deborah is a real estate broker. Prior to that, she was with interior design in San Diego and a flight attendant for 20 years before that.

on September 19. She discussed the release of her debut novel
The Guineveres. Released to critical acclaim in 2016,
The Guineveres is about four girls united by their strange, old-fashioned name and a desperation to escape the convent where their parents abandoned them to be raised by nuns.
Allie Chinchar-Bettes '03 is now a meteorologist with CNN and has been actively covering the hurricanes this month. With all of the hurricane coverage you may have seen her.
Sophie Gorman '17 is a f
reshman playing for the University of Cincinnati Women's Soccer team. Sophie has scored two goals this year, and both were game-winners.
