January 8, 2021
Good Morning,

Happy New Year to all Meadowbrook families! We are excited to be back and can't wait to welcome in-person learners back on Tuesday, January 19th.

I want to start this week by congratulating one of our teachers, Paige Jespersen. Paige had a small, intimate wedding over winter break with immediate family present. Paige says she will still respond to Miss Jespersen, but her new name is Mrs. Psaila.

We have a handful of students moving between in-person and remote learning, but we didn't need to relocate any classroom teachers over break. This means that all in-person students will be in the same classroom with the same teacher and assistant as the first semester.

Teachers will be completing report cards over the next two weeks, and parents will be emailed information to access their child's report card on Friday, January 22. You should be looking for an email from Vicky Mazur on this date.

Please note that Friday, January 15 is a 12:00 dismissal. Teachers will be planning and working on student report cards during this afternoon. Also, this month's PTO meeting has been moved to Wednesday, January 20 at 9:15.

Lastly, if you have a child that will be 5 years old by September 1, 2021 please see the kindergarten registration item in the District Information section below.

Enjoy your weekend,

Greater Chicago Food Depository Giving Campaign
We know many families have been impacted by the pandemic and associated economic concerns this year. During this holiday season, the elementary schools in District 28 are hoping to work together to bring food, dignity, and hope to our neighbors across Cook County who are experiencing hunger. Please join us in a virtual food drive running today through January 15th! Every donation to our food drive provides nourishing food for those at risk of hunger. Every $1 can help provide 3 meals! Your support makes an immediate impact to take hunger off the table. Our goal is to raise $28,000 for the Greater Chicago Food Depository! So far, we have raised $7,546. Click here for more information or to donate. We can do this!

Fifth Grade Yearbook Photos Needed
The fifth grade yearbook committee needs your help in collecting photos for this year's yearbook. They are looking for baby photos, recent photos and anything in between. Please see this yearbook flier for details. Thank you to Claudy Thompson, Liz Wang, Jocelyn Garner and Liz Chmiel for taking on this big project!
Technology Support
Should your child need tech assistance during remote learning, please submit a Parent Tech Help Request Form.
The Meadowbrook Tech Support Specialist, Sue Ryder, will receive it promptly and follow up with you. Also, visit the Parent Tech Help website for troubleshooting information and tutorials.
Updated In-person Health and Safety Guidelines
If your children are enrolled for in-person learning during the second semester, you should have received Dr. Hewitt's letter yesterday that included links to our updated health and safety guidelines. The guidelines have been updated with the latest health protocols and modifications we have made to accommodate the colder weather.

Whether your family is new to in-person learning this semester or returning, please take a few minutes to review the elementary guidelines and the junior high guidelines.
4th-Grade Placement Reminder

Dear Parents and/or Guardians of 4th-Grade Students,

If your child is not currently placed in advanced math and you wish to request a math placement review, a parent nomination form must be completed and returned to the school principal and the building GT services coordinator by January 19, 2020.

Parent nomination forms can be found on the District 28 website, under Gifted and Talented. Please visit our website for additional information on the district’s Gifted and Talented Services and District assessments.

Please note, all students are reviewed for math placement in the winter and spring of their 5th-grade year. This process determines placement for 6th grade into one of three math courses: Grade 6, Accelerated 6 or Pre-Algebra 6.
Remote Learning Academy News
Spanish Schedule Revised Starting the Week of January 19
Starting the week of January 19 and continuing throughout the second semester, Grade 1 - 5 RLA students will attend Spanish class four days a week, an increase of one day per week. This additional time will provide students opportunities to practice skills to ensure commensurate progress with onsite students. Your child’s teacher will communicate the day and time of the additional Spanish instruction.

MAP Testing Begins January 19 for Students in Grades 2-5
Our winter MAP testing window will be January 19 - February 26. Like fall, we will be able to administer this test remotely to our RLA students. As a reminder, MAP is a computer-adaptive test and adjusts the difficulty of questions as a child works on the test. This means that your child may see questions about content he or she has not seen before or been taught. To accurately reflect your child’s strengths and to help your child’s teacher know what he/she needs to learn next, please don’t step in and help your child with answers. The most important thing you can do is ask your children to do their best and reassure them that there are questions about concepts they haven’t learned yet, but will soon!
Click here for additional details and a FAQ related to remote MAP testing. Your child’s teacher will share the specific dates and times that your child will take these assessments soon.

RLA Material Pickup & Library Reminder
The next materials pick up will be Wednesday, January 13, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Your child’s teacher will communicate if your child has new materials or library books for pickup. We would also ask that you return library books so that we receive books back by their due dates. Students joining RLA for second semester will be included in this pickup, if materials are needed.
