Meals on Wheels of

Lee’s Summit!

As cities across the United States celebrate March for Meals, Fox 4 visited Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit to focus on local government support for our program. Across the metro, Kansas City residents, from the comfort of their living rooms, were able to watch Lee’s Summit mayor Bill Baird greet our drivers and load meals into cars.

“We are fortunate to have the support of Mayor Baird and the city of Lee’s Summit,” Mike Gann, Meals on Wheels board member and local organizer of March for Meals shared. “For 6 consecutive years, Bill has worked with us to personally deliver meals to local Lee’s Summit residents and shine a light on our contribution to the community with an annual City Hall Proclamation. We are grateful to the mayor for his continued support.”

For over 20 years, Meals on Wheels programs across America have been celebrating their partnerships with local businesses, government, and the individuals who volunteer and donate. “The annual March for Meals campaign commemorates President Nixon’s national nutrition program, signed into law March of 1972,” Mike added. “That legislation is responsible for launching Meals on Wheels programs across the United States. It’s a special month for us and all our partners in the community.”

Thank you for making Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit a success!

50 Years of Memories

“Memories, like the corner of my mind…” You know the song! “The Way We Were” by Barbra Streisand was the top grossing song of 1974, but it’s not the only thing we at Meals on Wheels remember from this landmark year. 50-years ago Lois Elbel and Linda Dempsey started Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit with 15 clients, an operation that has now served over 650,000 meals. Talk about a blockbuster hit! (No offense, Babs.)

Celebrate our 50th Anniversary with us by becoming a Golden Giver! Sign up here to begin your monthly contribution of $19.74 and we’ll send you a commemorative coffee tumbler as a thank you! Keep your coffee hot for your 1974 movie night featuring Blazing Saddles! Keep your coffee hot as you thumb through Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel, Carrie! Keep your coffee hot as you peruse your extensive ABBA cassette collection! Keep your coffee hot as you mumble along with Babs trying to remember the misty watercolor lyrics of “The Way We Were”! The possibilities are endless when you’re a Golden Giver. Thank you for your support!

The Boys in Blue and Clean Cars too!

The Royals are back, and we at Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit couldn’t be more excited for this highly anticipated season to begin! We’ve been busy in the kitchen decorating cookies with royal blue sprinkles for the clients, but their biggest treat will be our drivers decked out in big league fashion. Royal’s Spirit Week ran the week of March 25 and we awarded our most spirited drivers with Quick Clean Carwash certificates. And thank you to Karen Montgomery at Reece Nichols for donating Royals calendars to our volunteers!

Shamrock the Block

St. Patrick’s Day Weekend was packed in downtown Lee’s Summit as Meals on Wheel gathered with local merchants for the first annual Shamrock the Block! “What a turnout!” Meals on Wheels board member Terry Kincheloe shared. “Hundreds showed up to participate in this family-friendly city event, I even brought my son Brett to work the Meals on Wheels tent.”

Green beads, candy and St. Patrick’s Day pins were among the many handouts, but Meals on Wheels went a different direction. “We’re always thinking of our clients,” Jenni Edwards, Operations Director acknowledged. “This event was a great opportunity to provide coloring sheets for kids to decorate and share with our clients when their meals are delivered. It’s a wonderful way to remind the homebound that they are not forgotten in our community,” Jenni shared.

Over 100 children created artwork for Meals on Wheels clients.
