What's Happening at the Rancho?
Janet Brown Becker Retires on September 29, 2020
It is with mixed feelings that we announce
Historic Gardens Associate Janet Brown Becker’s retirement from the Rancho.

Janet has worked diligently and creatively throughout her years at the Rancho, with Pamela Seager, horticulturists, garden staff, and volunteers to preserve and restore the site’s gardens for the benefit of the public.

Perhaps Janet’s greatest contribution over the last several years has been working with the Garden Volunteers. Janet’s work has leveraged their time and expertise into the equivalent of two additional full-time gardeners on site! Together their work has had a significant impact on the appearance, health, and longevity of our treasured gardens.

Moving forward, RLA Grounds Manager Karen Thompson, Ambyr Hardy, and Garden Volunteer Representative Sue Schweiger will work together for a smooth transition during this time of change. The Garden Volunteers’ schedule will remain the same – Tuesdays from 9-12 with staggered start times.

Please join us in wishing Janet a bright and beautiful future!
Meet our new Museum Housekeeper, Tracy Flaming
Tracy started with us at the beginning of March, just two weeks before we closed due to the pandemic. In that time, she has been cleaning and taking care of the Ranch House, both inside and out. She has also spent time on the barn exteriors, removing cobwebs, dusting, and caring for the artifacts in the Sheepherder’s Wagon, the Tack Room, and Nick’s Room. Tracy is also part of the sanitizing team for the Rancho Center and public areas.

Tracy is primarily here on Mondays and Tuesdays, but if you see her when you are here, please introduce yourself!
Thank you!
Long Beach Gives
Raised a Whopping $15,465!

WOW! Words cannot convey our gratitude to all of you for your generous support of the LBG Campaign!

Rancho Volunteers far exceeded the challenge match from Matt and Briana Knabe - raising more than $8,400 combined (168% of the VSC's goal!).

It's inspiring when everyone comes together, pitches in and achieves great things. Thank you, Rancho Volunteers, for your enduring and impactful support.

Looking Ahead
Keep a lookout for the Blacksmith!
In the coming weeks we hope to welcome back the sights, sounds, and scents of metalworking as Dave and Jack fire up the forge during public hours. You'll notice that we've moved some equipment to facilitate safe viewing of their work. We'll continue to adjust as necessary, so remember this arrangement is tentative.

We're also happy to welcome a new Blacksmith to our team, Brad Hearn.
Be sure to stop by and say hello
(from a safe distance, of course).
SITE CLOSED for Tree Pruning
Wednesday, October 7 &
Thursday, October 8

The Rancho will be closed to the public on Wednesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 8 for major tree pruning along the Main Drive and pathway open to the public.
Thank you!
Please Provide your Input
Volunteers are so important to us, and essential to the Rancho remaining open to the public whenever possible. Please email Ambyr, Katie, or Info to share your ideas and suggestions.
  • Considering our COVID-19 adaptations, are you interested and able to continue volunteering in rain, wind, heat, or cold weather?
  • How might you adapt our outdoor tours in case of poor weather?

Please remember, things may change at any time. Thank you.

  • Wash and/or sanitize your hands frequently and avoid touching your face.
