A hummingbird is nesting in the cup of gold vine on the Back Patio right now.
Be sure to give them their space.
Thanks to volunteer Terry Barber for the great photograph!

Parrots and Skunks...Oh My!
|
|
From Docent Roberta Rogoff: "This is a first! A guest brought their parrot, Martin, on his stroller to visit the Rancho. Martin went back in the car while [the visitors] strolled the Rancho. Martin is absolutely beautiful and has an adorable personality, and quite a vocabulary."
Pets are not permitted at the Rancho for the safety of the historic landscape and our livestock. Thanks for sharing, Roberta!

Head Gardener Jesse Herrera recently observed a large striped skunk in the Friendly Garden. Click on the image above (or follow this link: https://youtu.be/JAqRfg4bITE) to see it in action!
Skunks are "opportunistic omnivores," meaning they will eat almost anything (insects, mice, fruit, etc.). As you'll see in the video, skunks are "lawn specialists" and will commonly use their claws to dig underground for grubs to eat.
What wildlife have you observed at the Rancho? Send Ambyr or Katie a picture and story to feature in a future Meanwhile!

The Ranch House is Now Open,
and We Need You!
|
|
Thanks to our volunteers, we may open the
main hallway of the Ranch House to visitors!
We have 2- or 4-hour shifts, Wednesday-Sunday, between 1-5 pm.
While we are not offering tours or in-depth interpretation,
we can now warmly welcome guests to view some of our interior spaces.
Outside shifts still include Check-in,
mobile positions in the Gardens, Barns, Parking Lot, and a Floater,
and we have two, three, or four House Stations that include a chair.
We must fill all priority stations (above in bold type) to open the house.
