Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff,

We are reaching out to share important information about measles, a highly contagious virus that has been reported in 26 states since January of 2025. On April 23, 2025, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced a confirmed case of measles in Illinois. While no cases have been reported at IMSA or the surrounding area, we want to ensure everyone is informed about prevention, vaccination, and exclusion guidelines as a proactive measure to protect the health and safety of our school community.

About Measles

Measles is a serious respiratory disease that spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, and close contact with individuals who have symptoms of measles. It can cause high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash. Complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling, and, in rare cases, death.

Vaccination Requirements

The best protection against measles is the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends two doses of MMR for full protection. Most students and staff have already received these vaccinations as part of routine childhood immunization schedules. However, we encourage everyone to check their records and ensure they are up to date.

  • People born before 1957 are considered to have “presumptive evidence” of immunity, because nearly everyone born in this period has natural immunity from the illness during childhood.
  • Adults who were immunized between 1963, when the first measles vaccine was approved, and 1967 should receive at least one dose of the live MMR vaccine, according to the CDC.

If you or your child has not received the MMR vaccine or if you are unsure of your or your child’s vaccination status, please consult your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Please submit updated immunization records to the Health Office after receiving any vaccination.

Exclusion Policy

In the event of a confirmed measles case within the school:

  • Unvaccinated individuals (including those with exemptions) will be excluded from school for up to 21 days following exposure to prevent further spread.
  • Vaccinated individuals may continue attending school unless otherwise advised by health authorities.

These guidelines are based on the recommendations of the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Protecting Our Community

We are committed to maintaining a healthy school environment. We encourage everyone to:

  • Review your immunization records
  • Watch for signs and symptoms of illness
  • Stay home when sick
  • Notify the school nurse if your child is diagnosed with or exposed to measles.

We understand that health concerns can be stressful, and we appreciate your partnership and support in safeguarding our students and staff. More information about measles can be found on the American Academy of Pediatrics or the Nemours Kids Health website.  If you have any questions or need assistance with vaccination resources, please contact the health office at 630-907-5008.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to keeping our school community safe.
