Measure X Funds Increased Road Repairs

Avoiding potholes is on everyone's mind with the increased rain opening them up at an unprecedented rate this winter. Public Works crews are out daily filling them (please report potholes via the City app!).

On dry days, the City's Engineering Division is overseeing slurry seals and overlays (including new high-speed fiber optic) in areas throughout the City, including the construction of new ADA sidewalk ramps. See current work areas below. Plans are being made to repair higher-use arterial roads in the next round.

Measure X Funds a New Police

Community Service Officer Program

Measure X revenue is funding the Police Department's Community Service Officer Program. OPD recently hired five new Community Service Officers. The program is designed to create a pipeline of future police officers, dispatchers, forensic technicians, and analysts when vacancies occur. An added benefit is the increased staff capacity throughout the Department, and the program allows sworn police officers to more quickly respond to emergencies.

The Community Service Officers write reports, collect, book, and photograph property for evidence, perform crowd control, take traffic accident reports, and more.

OPD is still staffing up---it's a great opportunity for Oceanside residents!

Measure X Funds EMTs / Ambulances

With the passage of Measure X came the formation of the Fire Department EMT program, along with the purchase of ambulances and equipment. Through mentoring, the program encourages talented EMTs to enter Oceanside's Firefighter/Paramedic Academies. Read about an Oceanside EMT becoming a firefighter and gaining his citizenship.

The Fire Department recently converted 12 part-time EMT positions to three full-time positions. Increasing the number of full-time benefitted positions provides an incentive to stay here in Oceanside and decreases the cost to recruit, train, and provide uniforms to part-time EMTs. This conversion also led to the ability to staff a third Basic Life Support ambulance.

New Fire Station 1 Construction Progress

The construction of the new Fire Station 1 is underway and making significant progress at the corner of Civic Center Drive and N. Freeman Street. Water utility service has been installed, foundation work is laid, and the framing of the building and off-site sewer work is underway.

The new station will replace the nearly 100-year old downtown firehouse at the corner of Pier View Way and N. Nevada Street. Since 1929, that first small station has served our community well, but a modern facility designed to fit today's apparatus and crews is needed.

New Oceanside Police Headquarters Project

Since 1999, the Oceanside Police Headquarters has been located in a shopping center on Mission Avenue, a facility that was intended to serve as a temporary location for 10 years.

A new Police Headquarters is proposed to be located across from the City's El Corazon property on Rancho Del Oro Road (draft rendering above).

A public meeting was held on March 15 meeting to answer community questions and gather community input. Staff and the project architect presented an overview of the proposed facility. Stay tuned for next steps.

Work on the Police Facility Study and the design and engineering of this project will be funded by Measure X. Funding for the actual construction of the project will be from other sources.
