Fire Training Tower Unveiled
At a dedication ceremony yesterday, the Oceanside Fire Department unveiled its newly constructed state-of-the-art Fire Training Tower at 110 Jones Road. Thanks to Measure X funding, the new facility will prepare Oceanside public safety personnel for generations to come.

This four-story facility is a live, controlled-fire training structure, which provides conditions similar to actual fire calls: searing heat in live fire burn rooms on various floors, a myriad of smoke-filled halls and rooms, interior and exterior stairways, bailout windows, and multiple floors where people may be in need of rescue.
Crews will practice forced entry, working in dark and confined spaces, using breathing apparatus in thick smoke, and fighting live fires. Personnel will also practice using a building’s pressurized water standpipe system to pump water to needed areas. The structure’s rooftop includes rope rescue anchors and an area to train on breaching a roof. All features are designed to ensure Oceanside Fire Department (OFD) personnel safely prepare for dangerous situations, in order to save lives and property.

The new Fire Training Tower replaces an aged one-story facility on the training grounds and consolidates multiple onsite and offsite training facilities into one location.
The Training Tower was dedicated yesterday to former OFD Training Officer Everett Stephens. Stephens (pictured, right) became one of Oceanside’s first full-time firefighters around 1940, and served the City for 29 years. He was known as a skilled professional dedicated to protecting the community and drilling the safety strategies, lifesaving techniques, hazards and precautions of the profession into new firefighters.

Oceanside’s Everett Stephens Fire Training Tower will serve not only new OFD recruits and the entire Department, but the facility will be available for regional public safety training use as well.
New Downtown Fire Station 1 Groundbreaking Today
Oceanside’s iconic first Fire Station downtown, designed by renowned American architect Irving Gill, was built nearly 100 years ago in 1929. It’s thought to be one of the oldest functioning fire stations in the country. Back then, Oceanside’s population was about 3,500 people. Fast forward a century, and Oceanside has a bustling downtown, taller residential buildings, hotel resorts, and a citywide population of over 174,000.

Throughout Oceanside’s evolution, that first small station has served the community well, but a modern facility designed to fit today's apparatus and crews is needed. With Oceanside’s new Fire Training Tower and soon-to-come new downtown Fire Station, a new era in Oceanside public safety facilities is marked.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held today at the new Fire Station 1 Project site at 602 Civic Center Drive. Funding from Measure X is supplying the majority of the project's design and construction costs. Aside from Measure X, the City received a $3.5 million federal Defense Community Infrastructure Program grant for this project -- one of only 13 projects selected nationwide. This station will also serve neighboring jurisdictions when assistance is needed.

New Fire Station 1 will encompass two levels and will include a five-bay apparatus space that will house a fire engine, fire truck ladder company, an ambulance, battalion chief vehicle, and equipment. The building’s ground floor will include a lobby, conference, and training rooms. The second floor will house living accommodations for up to 12 personnel, shared bathrooms, and a kitchen. The station will be complete with a back-up power supply and rooftop solar panels.
